I just bought the Tascam MKII and did not realize that only tracks 1-4 have preamps. Unfortunately when I bought it off ebay I didn't get the manual and have yet to find one. Now, how am I supposed to use tracks 5-8. Do I need to buy a mic preamp or is there a way to plug into track one, for example, and record to track 5. OR do I have to just bounce the tracks over to the tracks without the preamp. I thought that bouncing tracks like that would end up in a loss of quality, but then again I'm new to this. Any help would be great.

Eh,...

The preamps on Channels 1-4 may be routed in any combination to tracks [1-4] in Group 1, or tracks [5-8] in Group 2, through a method known as buss-track-assignment, using the Assign buttons, Record Function and Pan controls.

Simple, huh? ;)

There was an online bootleg of the 488mkII manual, but it's been taken down. Your best bet is to call Tascam Parts and order a copy, @ (323)727-8480.

What ARP said ( and make sure to order the manual so you can understand what this machine is capable of doing), and here's how to make it happen:

Doesn't matter what channel you're plugged in to, just where you finally route your signal.
Assuming you realize your pan must be all the way to the left for odd number channels (1,3,5,7) and all the way right for even numbers (2,4,6,8), to send your signal to...
Track 1, pan all the way to the left, push button group 1-2 to "in" position or channel you are putting your signal through (the CHANNEL # where you record your signal into has NOTHING to do with the track you are going to send it to...don't get confused on this).
Tr. 2, pan right, push button 1-2 in and push "2" so track 2 is flashing in your meter window
Tr.3, pan left, push button 3-4 and push "3"...

skip,
skip,
skip,
Tr. 7, pan left, push button 3-4 to "in" position on your input channel, push "7" button under your meter screen.

The biggest thing is not confusing a channel you are recording into with a "track". Once you are comfortable with this separation, it will be easy. In other words, you can use channel 1 to record all 8 tracks. Or channel 4. It doesn't matter really which channel you record into.

Yo Jack Spratt and No Fat:

Wouldn't you know it, I have a copy of the 488MKII manual.

Interested?

Not interested? That's OK. Follow above directions. But, as I recall when I used two of the 488s, you can use a 1/4 plug to feed into any of the tracks.

Yep. I'm looking at the manual right now and the jack-plugs are there.

I never did like turning left/right for channels; thus, I think I just ran the tracks with the knob straight up. Of course, depends on how you like to control your recordings.

Yo Ghost Man:

Glad you can send the 488 manual copy for free. I had to pay a few semolians/pezzuots to get someone to copy my original manual.

So, you're a better deal and that's good.

I did some really good work on my 488s--but digital is also very nice.

Time for a libation.

Aaaagh!

I don't know why I always misquote Tascam's number, since I call it often enough!

Tascam Parts' CORRECT NUMBER is (323)727-4840.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
