making 'space' for instruments in the mix

I have a recording with a piano that is quite dynamic, along with a drum track. The problem I have is that the drums and piano tend to merge into one another too much. I'd appreciate any advice on how to create space for each in the mix please.

I forgot to mention that the piano is recorded mono. and I have tried panning one left and one right (slightly)

What kind of drum beats are we talking about here? if its quite simple you could try EQing the piano gently to make room for the drums.

Panning is one way, but a good mix will stand-up in mono as well. It sounds like there are frequencies masking one another. Try using complimentary EQ, where you boost a particular frequency in one intrument, and cut the same frequency in the other. Of course which frequency you cut or boost should be appropriate for that instrument and the effect you are trying to create.

Mixing is a lot like politics, you have to find the right compromise to please the majority. In this case it's instruments competing for the same frequency range.

IMHO where I would start is compressing the piano so its RMS volume can keep up with a probably compressed drum kit. Next I'd look into probably cutting out some of the piano's low end (anything under 100hz probably has to get cut back... use a HP filter) and accenting the 10khz+ range to bring out those harmonics essential for good seperation.

That's quite interesting, as I've never really known piano and drums to compete with one another. What you'd probably want to do is cut some mids out of the drums and boost some mids on the piano.

i think turning the drums down would be enough....if its just a drum and piano bit....the piano will probably be what most people are listening for
