I decided to save some bucks I'm going to make my own rackmount out of wood. Yes it is going to be ugly, and will probably be very funny to look at.
Anyways, anyone have any suggestions on construction of this amazing project, or how to mount the rackgear to it?

send pics when your done

If you want it totally ghetto, make a box deep enough and screw some wider strips of wood to each side and screw your rack gear into that.

If you want it halfway decent, get some rack rails (they're cheap) and then make the rest out of wood.

You can purchase pre-drilled Rack rails at Guitar Center

OR You can buy rack rails online at Musiciansfriend.com They are not very expensive.

Attach thse rails to some wood planks (OAK is nice!) pine is cheaper...

My racks look very nice and were very inexpensive to make.

DOM :D

I made a simple box frame out of 1" sq pine strips, with simple glued and screwed butt joints. A hardboard top, bottom and left and right sides made it rigid, a simple handle was screwed directly into additional strips running horizantally across the frame halfway up each side the frame each side, with vertical pieces above them to act as a brace. I used a piece of rack gear to make sure I had the critical internal width dimension right (yes, it is exactly 19" between the two inner faces of the vertical strips)

For mounting the gear, I put the completed frame on its back, so I could slot my gear in from the top , and marked the hole positions with a pencil. These were drilled with a 5/16" bit, and the gear secured with M6 bolts, rubber washers (between the gear and the wood) and nuts from a hardware shop. I painted the whole thing black. Cost less than $10 and took a couple of hours.

Thanks for the quick replies! now that I got some Ideas of what to do its time to make a trip to the Hardware store! I have some rack rails my friend gave me from his behringer mixer.

I made one for a buddies basement with a skill saw and some cheep home depot pine and it looks pretty sweet. Even made a lid for it to keep out the dust. And i am NOT a carpenter.
You can do it without the worry of it turning out bad. Just get decent wood.
I used wood 1" by 2" for the rack rail, and used wood screws to mount the gear. No-one even notices!! :D
