My audio teacher brought me some cable he had (West Pin) and gave me a male and female end of an XLR ... he showed me how to put it together and then i did it ... I was interested in making myself some ... anyone know a good wire I could buy and where to find it:? I searched for "west pin" on google but i could not find anything

For mic cables, Mogami 2534 with the metal Neutrik ends. Get the raw matterial HERE .

I always buy Canare Starquad cable (because it's top quality and there's a shop nearby that sells it) and either Neutrik or Switchcraft connectors. I just made a 25 foot mic cable < $23.00. Beats the hell out of paying big $ for Monster.

how many dollars are normally saved when making your own?

Not much, the manufactures buy in bulk. Good wire/cable and connectors are not cheap and your time making it is worth something.

so i doubt i wouldnt make much if i decided to make and sell my cables?

unless they are weird cables, like 1/4 TRS(m)- XLR (F), they cost over 25 buck everywhere, got parts from parts express, even with gold contacts saves about 13 bucks

I agree and disagree. It all depends on what quality you want--and how important $10-$15 per cable is to you. I can build a 20ft Canare quad XLR cable with Neutrik/Switchcraft connectors for $17.00. The equal B.L.U.E. KIWI quad cable will cost you $30.00-35.00, a 20ft Mogami gold series will cost $$40.00-50.00, a 20ft Monster 500 will cost $50.00-$60.00.

I won't buy cheap cables.

For me it's usually worth the time and effort to make my own. YMMV

Switchcraft male and female XLR cable mounts cost about $3.50 each, and 20 feet of Mogami mic cable cost about $13. Total cost is about $20 plus whatever your time is worth, solder, and etc, per mic cable.
