I've recently been getting into producing, using only Fruity Loops 6, but I'm having a hard time with it. Its not the part of knowing how to use the program that gets me, its that I'm having trouble meshing all the sounds together into a structured beat, if that makes sense. What exactly do or should a good beat consist of? Which should be laid first, drumline, piano's, bass lines? If someone could run me through their beat making process it'd be greatly appreciated...

you should do a thread search, as I made one just this week!

Lots of good advice there, though the gist of it was just make a solid tempo, aroun 75-100bpm and then add a hook and a phat bass.
immerse yourself in the genre and go from there.

Unfortunately All i have is Method Man: Tical 0 the Prequel, so I have been obsessing over finding the right string sound.....

Aiight, I'll go through my whole process.

First, I'll start with the drumline (unless I have a melody that won't leave me alone and then I'll record it on one instrument and then do the drumline).
I'll make the hi-hats first (depending on the type of beat I'm making, I might put them in and then remove them completely). Then I'll lay in the drums. Sometimes I'll use two different drums like a 909 and then an 808 here and there for added effect, sometimes I won't...all depends on what sounds good on my ear. Then I'll add in the claps or woodblocks (or both if it sounds right). Then I'll add in stuff like reverses, brushes, cymbals, gongs, bells, guiros, and shakers. Last thing I'll do is add some sound effects to blend in with the drums and give it depth.

After that, I lay down a smooth bassline to give it added punch without it being too muddy.

Then I'll work on my main melody. Sometimes the main actually isn't intended to be as in front of stuff as other instruments, but it makes for the backbone of the track...without it, it wouldn't carry as much weight. I usually make those with pianos, guitars, or strings. If I go ethnic, I might switch up to like a sitar, koto, or a flute or something.

Then I'll copy the melody and choose another instrument to back it to give it depth (this is cake to do in Reason but I don't know about the Fruity...been a LONG time since I used it like version 3 or something). Sometimes I'll even do this with 2 different instruments and have one of the extra instruments coming only in certain parts of the verse or in the hook.

Then I make a second completely new melody that accompanies the first one. I usually don't layer instruments with the second melody so I use an instrument that will stand out enough to where I don't have to do that so it won't overcrowd the beat and a artist can use it easier.

After that, if I add anything that goes in and out of the beat like synths and extra sound effects, I'll put that in.

Then I'll make a third melody that might be only for the hook. Something to make it stand out and say "that's where the hook gon' be...an' I'ma say you need a hook on this beat LOL" (yeah I went there...shoot me later). You can also put a weak instrument with this melody somewhere in the verse and then have multiple instruments playing the third melody in the hook.

All I really do after that is double check my sequencing and mix the damn thing down and test the mix in different speakers and systems since right now I mix all my beats on the laptop from headphones that I trust.

As far as tempos, mine range anywhere from 80 - 110

Hope that helped you out a little bit,
Fiev.

Thanks Fieva, that helps a lot. What do your drumlines consist of? I usually only put kicks and snares but I know I'm doing it all wrong... Everytime I try putting in hi-hats and whatnot it just sounds out of place... Guess I just need a lot more practice... How long does it typically take you to make a beat?

depends....sometimes I'll stop and take a breather and come back with fresh ideas.

Sometimes I'll do one all the way....usually takes me about an hour to make something complicated from start to finish (including mixing).

How long have you been making beats...I've been at it for about 4 years now, almost 5.

Haha... I just started man... like maybe a month ago... I started just for the fun of it, but now I've been thinking about doing it seriously, just need to build up my skills a lot... So far I've only finished 1 solid beat... I dont think its too bad considering I had only like 2 weeks of experience behind it.

hehe, i remember that stage where we wished there was a definitive answer to 'how to make the sweet soundin beat'. honestly, just start with whatever u got in ur head. for me i personally start out with a lead line or a bass line then move onto the drums, make some more intricacies, then just try to sequence and layer it all together. but then again, sometimes ill start with drums like fieva and do his process. it really all depends on what sounds go to ur ear. although u may be frustrated now with ur production skills, thats actually a good thing. u realize that what ur making is not sounding right and u want to fix it. thats something that took me a while (i was satisfied with mediocre, now i cant stand it if its not tracked, mixed, and mastered to perfection).

just keep at it cuddie n ull get there. like djhead stated, use the search function, ive learned a lot from this forum with that simple tool -_-.

Thats the easy part.
Just listen and make something you like.
start with the baseline, drums. After that get your melody.
The only part that is difficult is the hook. I just been switching it up a bit.
Im working on it, The first mistake people make is making a 6 second loop and calling it a song.
check sum of my beats out I made them all quick.
Im taking more time this time around.
