Because it would only work out to a few dollars that would be better spent supporting the BBS.
Consider how much Dragon pays each year for a dedicated server for this free service that brings us all together. The ads don't pay for squat and the tipjar doesn't give you a CD in return for your donation. Consider how much money is required upfront to dupe and print CD's!
This is a volunteer non-profit project. We've already sent Dragon $500 from the first comp cd, and there's still more of those to be sold. I figure if we do a comp cd per year then the BBS might become self-sufficient, which will increase the chances of it existing for a long time to come.
And really, people are going to be buying this CD in support of the BBS...not so that we contributors can have a little extra pocket cash! I mean you're bound to enjoy some of the material, but it's not going to become your favorite CD of all time

If we look at figures from the first CD, it should bring in a total profit of around $800. Divide that up between all 20 contributors and they each earn $40. Give half to the BBS and they each earn their submission money back....but the BBS is still underfunded. Not really worth it if you ask me.
Also consider that the more upfront money I have to start up a new project, the more the project can evolve. Depending on the actual requirements of this volume, we *might* be able to press a real CD, which would just be great for everyone involved I think. If not, we might be able to do it next time if sales are high enough.
Good question though...we considered this several times when planning for the first one. Maybe if we get really lucky and the Comp CD takes off and sells thousands of copies we can consider paying back royalties....but I only expect to sell 100+ of volume II...200 max.
Rest assured that nobody is making out on this project. I don't have any new gear to show for it...neither does Dragon or anyone else.
