Herbi-Whore
just curious...Ive got my amp right next to my computer...(i live in a closet under the stairs)...will this bigassed magnet fry my computer?

Your monitor won't like it, that's for sure.

If it's too close to the monitor, you'll know by the distortion in the picture, and the colors will be really psychadelic.

They are most likely shielded... Most companies these days that manufacture powered speakers (monitors) understand the chance that they will be close to a computer monitor...

Now, the speaker in the amp, I guarantee is NOT sheilded, and shouldn't be anywhere near the computer monitor..

Plus there are also issue's of magnetic storage mediums like Floppies etc....

Man.. if it's possible, get that big assed amp away from that shit..

How can the amp be shielded but not the speaker? Also, what's a floppy disk? (just kidding, does anyone use those anymore?)

Well.. i know that I always use floppies for word documents etc..

And if a floppy is in the drive and an unshielded speaker is near you might wipe out the disk...

And when this person says "Amp" im thinking like a fender combo or the like which wouldn't have a shielded speaker...

But most powered studio monitors are shielded....

Is that clearer??

Ahhh, an electric guitar amp! I got rid of all my electric guitar stuff a few years ago and have been "unplugged" ever since. I do sometimes use Floppy disks, but that 1.44M limit is a pain. I prefer Zip disks for things like that (and CD-Rs for backups).
Thanks for clarifying!

ahh frick just remebered floppies yeah they erase easily....

floppies, can't live without em

I don't mind floppies for text files, word processing, and the like. I even use em to store jpg's on when I'm working with webpages and such. I have used floppies as a text backup for our computer...we got A LOT of text files in our Documents folder. Now obviously anything greater than what a floppy can hold then I'm using CDR/CDRW. I actually think floppies are great and probably use them more than some people. I know some people here at school say they don't even bother with floppies anymore since they think electronically is better (through email if they want to work on assignment at home) but I always carry my floppies with me at school. Personally I can't believe they've been out as long as they have, after all, we know what happened to 5" floppies. :D In 10 years will the standard 3.5" floppy still be around?

will amps harm things like my mixer or anything right? (just an outboard mixer, goes straight to the comp).

i assume not..

By the time you get a foot away from your amp the magnetic field is so diffused, even a floppy would probably be safe. Of course strong magnetic fields can effect all kinds of electonic equipment with anything from noise to a control malfunction. A prudent person would avoid close proximity.

Twist

Actually, the REAL problem may just be the opposite of what you thought......

Computers emit all kinds of EM signals; some in the audible range. Your amp or the pickups in your guitar could easily pick that up as noise. And because computers use square waves, the noise will be full of rich, pleasing harmonic overtones.

Yeah..... get the amp away from the computer. Or better yet, get the 'puter away from the amp.
