Mackie pre's? Are they the same in vlz and cfx ect.?

I would like to get another mixer for recording so I can pull my live mixer out of the loop. I am thinking about renting a Jam Hall so I need to free up my live rig.

What I am wondering is if the cheaper models from mackie use the same pre's . I am currently using a vlz 24x4 and I do not want to go down in quality.

Does anyone know the answer?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's NOT a VLZ on the CFX Mackies. If you have a chance, check one of those boards, it should have VLZ written on the mic input jack...
 
Don't believe they put the XDR preamps in the CFX mixers. If they do, it will be stated clearly, cuz that's a selling point!

1202 VLZ Pro is the all round bestest cheapest in terms of pre quality. With four nice pres you get a free cheapo mixer built around it.

I would go for a soundcraft M series... I would say, forget the mackies...
 
knownuttin: well I have got to have at least 8 channels with pre's. 6 inputs (to be used as pre's into my Layla) would do because I plan to get some vocal pre's. Then I need two channels for monitoring and mastering. For the board to be as usefull as I want it to be I would like 12 mono channels with HI Z in, Lo Z in, and inserts.

I really do not care about these stereo channels all of the new mixers seem to be so in love with?????

I don't remember seeing any of those mixers w/ Hi Z inputs... those are for instruments right?!
Ok, take a look at the A & H 16:2 DX (or something like this)
I had a Mackie 1604 Pro w/o the VLZ pres and I really don't like it's EQ.
Maybe if you take it from the inserts out instead of the direct out...
 
Ya I have been looking at Soundcraft E series and the Allen Heaths. I really will not be running throught the EQ section much except for play back and stuff so the pre's are my main concern. I would like to have a sweepable mid though. Even better two sweepable mids, but I will not be shelling out enough money for that (I don't think at least)

Thanks for the input guys. I am sort of leaning tward the soundcraft. Still thinking though.
