Say Something Smart!
I'm looking for a cheap mixer to get started recording. I need 4 XLR inputs (with phantom, of course).

I can get an open-box Mackie DFX6 from 8th Street for $164.00, but I can also get a new Behringer UB1204 for $120.00 from 8th Street.

Are the Pre's in both noticebly different? I'll probably be buying a much better dual channel pre eventually, but I'd like to get started ASAP!

Comments?

And if this has been discussed extensivley, please point me in the direction of a good thread. The search function did nothing for me...

uuhhhh...

I dont know about the pres in Behringer mixers. This subject has been beat, handily, into the ground here. No biggie.

But, I think the general consensus is that the Mackie for a couple extra bucks is a much better bet.

Maybe look for a used 1202 on Ebay?

Thanks Gidge!

I was originally looking at the MG 12/4, but I don't have the 200 bucks right now...

Awesome!:D

Wait...
That Yamaha only has inserts on the 2 mono inputs, how would I get the other 2 to my soundcard?

BEHRINGER AINT THAT BAD!

i'd go ahead and get the behringer for 120 the pres are pretty decent

Okay. Do you have any experience with Behringer mixers? Do you know how they compare to Mackie's?

Now, I have a question about the UB1202.
On the top, it says "Aux Sends", and has 1 and 2 outputs. Are these for inputs channels 1 and 2? On the back of the unit, there's 3 and 4.

Am I understanding this correctly?

as compared to mackie

i will say there are subtle clarities with recording voices on mackie but prices 3 to 4 times the cost behringer. i wouldnt notice a difference unless i recorded one voice and one piano or something. if i had a trust fund and/or didnt pay rent, I'd probably be able to afford the mackie.

Now I'm thinking either the UB1204, or MG12/4, which is $80 more.

I could get the UB1204 NOW, or wait 'till I get the extra $80 and get the Yammie.

Is it worth waiting?

behringer vs. yamaha..nah get the behringer..if you were 80 off from a mackie with all the same stuff as the behringer or yamaha i would say get the mackie

I was under the impression that Yamaha was pretty comparable to Mackie.

Is this not true?

For what it is worth, I have used a Behri MX 602A, a Mackie VLZ Pro 1202 and a Yamaha MG 16/4. The pres in the Mackie and Yammie are much better than the Berhi, the Behringer sounds thin and brittle. The Yammie and the Mackie don't sound exactly the same, but I honestly have no preference for either one in terms of sound (I would rather have better pres altogether). So, that being said, in my experience, teh Yamaha is a significant improvement over the Behringer, the Mackie is maybe marginally better than the Yammie, but I am very content with my Yamaha board.

Thanks, cstockdale!

I guess I'll hold out for the MG12/4...

Thanks to distortedrumble as well.

:D
