Mackie Onyx 1620i with Aux Sends Questions

So I have a Mackie Onyx 1620i and I am planning on getting a Behringer FX 2000 to put on one of my Aux sends. Can an aux send be used to introduce compression into a mix or is it strictly effects that can be gradually activated like reverb.

Compression use with a mixer is usually applied via a channel insert.
