I don't know if this is enough time, but anyone with any info good or bad let me know. Is it better than the previous mackies as far as sound quality? I'm going to GC in about 4 hours to get one - $650. How does it compare to MWz3 16:2DX or a SC M12? I guess I can see for myself and return it. $650 won't kill me, put it towards a 16:2DX if I have to.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but everything i've been hearing is that the Onyx preamps are a vast improvement over the previous Mackie preamps, and that the EQ is much more useable.

Well, I just read that the Onyx outputs are ALL pre EQ/Pre Fade/Pre Roll offs. The D-24 outputs and the Firewire outputs and it looks like the Alt 3/4 out too. I think the EQ is only there for live/monitor use.

There's only 1 reason I want a board over outboard Pres. The ability to sub out from the comp, and sum back in. If these EQs are so great, it'd be nice to at least have the option of using them.

Maybe, somebody else knows how to do it.

J/C!!! Every single board I look at has at least one major drawback.
A/H looks like the best MX14:4:2 but nobody in town has one - special order - no return. I can get a 16:2DX but it has built in FX (digitech at that) and no bussing. The SC M12 looks good but I don't like the EQ bands, and it has alot of RCAs. NO RCAs - it's the 21st century. Behringer DUH! not an option. Midas - too expensive for what I need. Good stuff on Ebay, but the sellers have NO RATINGS. I'm not giving $600-1200 to someone with no feedback. I generally don't like mackies, but will try this onyx. But, nothing below the onyx - don't like em. I can't get the Onyx 1640 I want either - Special order - so I'll check out the 1620. But I don't need Firewire, I have a MOTU 828MkII, and like it.

Does the store you'd get the Onyx from have any type of return policy? If they do, then get the 1640 and try it out. If you like it, take it back and tell them you need the extra features the 1640 offers.

Yes they do. And I got it. A Mackie Onyx 1620 - $520 and 2 25pin-to-TRS snakes - brand spanking new (don't tell me big chain stores suck). And so far, just for monitoring, it sounds great. Got it at 9:00 had it thouroughly hooked up (patch bay/snakes - everything) by 10:00 to finish up a mix for the morning. It's amazing the stuff I was missing with my old Alesis32. The Onyx passes everything though to my monitors great. I'll be doing some tests this weekend.

I picked up the big Onyx 1640 and so far have used it for live music. It kicks ass.

The Onyx series is indeed nice, I'm using one for drum tracking and the preamps are good too. The direct outs and Firewire outs are simply post preamp and pre "everything else". The board is meant to be used as a live mixer and simultaneously recording live shows.

There was a guy on the TapeOp message boards who rewired the sucker so he could select the EQ on the DB25 outputs. You may want to do a search there if their boards are back in action again. I don't remember his user name.
