Mackie Monitors- Does anything compare

Just came back from A/B/Cing the Mackies HR824. The other monitors I compared them to were Event PS8's and Blue Sky's $1300 system w/ subwoofer.

The Mackies were the winner. Shimmering highs and detailed lows. The PS8's seemed to have a muddy low end by comparison and the Blue Sky had a lot of Bass with the subwoofer but just didn't sound as tight.

I am going to revisit the store and A/B them with the JBL LSRPs (25s)

Any other monitors people were blown away by?

I was planning on picking up the PS8s, 20/20s, or JBLs but after hearing the Mackies I think I am hooked (guess I'll have to keep saving up)

I suspect that the Mackies are pretty good speakers, probably very good.

However, for my purposes, the YSM-1 monitors work quite well.

But, I'm sure you've read about the YSM-1's on this site, as well as the Mackies, as well as the "others."

I guess that's why there is so "much" gear out there. Keeps all folks contributing to the economy, at different price levels of course.

Be very cautious, as the listening environment where you are A/B'ing may be favouring the Mackies........this may not apply in your own "home space".
I have heard them in a studio and the owner actually pulled them out cause they were too bass heavy.....all because of the room.

I A/B'd the Mackies against the Behringers, and they were pretty close...the mackies coming out winner, but then again the behringers were half the price of the Mackies
Keep in mind that the behringer is a ripoff of the mackie monitor anyway


IMO The Dynaudio BM6A Blows ANY other near midfield outta the water, but it is pricey

Point well taken. The listening room was acoustically treated unlike my "studio" space. Anyone ever purchase two sets of monitors with the intention of seeing which works best in a particular space?

Haven't tried the Truths yet. I crossed them off my list after the poor reviews I read. Will give them a listen next time I make it to guitar center. I agree the BM6As are really nice but I am already pushing it if I shell out the dough for the Mackies.
 
the mackies cost a little more but considering what you hear is important to you id say the hr824,s are the speakers to go for i feel they are the pick of all thats been mentioned so far i too listened and i went out and bought the mackie hr824,s :-) for my money i could not go past what my ears told me

And Rip Rowan would disagree. ;) Ears and minds can be so different.
 
In the end its all comes down to what you can afford thats one way of looking at it its hard to argue abot this subject everyone has their opionion in the end your ears and pocket is whats going to get you the speakers you require trust your ears first and dont worry about the sales talk ignore it all

i feel it is true speakers sound different from room to room the mackies to me sounded like they could define all the different sounds where i could hear them all individually in the mix they were crystal clear where they needed to be and big and punchy down below i listened to all else first on the same sitting with the same music and set up the mackies cooked everything else i listened too and it was by a big margin too so consider what else you can pick up for 1000 usd a pair then compare them see what sounds best for you
 
one other thing to note on price i picked these speakers up in australia at that price that would have been normally impossible to do as they retail for 3295 aussie dollars

i got them for 2000 aussie dollars 1000usd

deals can be had you just have to chase hard and talk quickly always go with the cash onboard this way once you have nailed the sales robot to their word you then cough up your side of the bargain before they have a chance to think essp if they say yes this is a bonus to you ive always found this way of dealing the best theres no point saying ahh i,ll come back next week they wont remember you or care to remember you either gear can be had cheap its all in the approach and how you do it

do not be scared to talk that and the money is all you have got if you want your new toys cheap what have you got to loose or i should say what will you have to save once you have got your stuff at a better then retail price :-)
