Makes sense... and a good employee perk. But watch out for karma.
Long ago I was in the advertising business and was breaking new territory for a news and arts weekly patterned after The Boston Phoenix. We were trying to pull market share from other, more established print media and so did all kinds of crazy things to make the column inches of ads flow. One place was an old greasy garage that had been in the hinterland for a few generations; if we could land that account we'd get a bunch of others too.
I had just bought a Honda Civic - the old style go kart that went like hell, but it had lousy tires. So I bartered an advertising contract with the guy and we ran his ads for a year. I traded retail value on the ad contract for his cost on a set of Michelins. On they went and I headed back to the office with a big grin. I then paid the paper its cost on the ad space for the duration of the contract. My grin was bigger as I headed home in my remarkably good handling Civic - and got nailed with a speeding ticket. Ended up costing me about fifty bucks more than it would have if I had just bought the damn tires.
