Mackie DFX 12 Mixer to Computer

Hey hey, I'm sorta new to this external mixer hooked to the computer... I know this has been asked at least 100 times but I'm sick of trying to find the exact thread with my situation. Right now I have no good soundcard or anything so I know it won't work right now. But I'm trying to figure out how exactly (assuming I buy a soundcard like the Delta 44) the computer splits up the separate channels from the mixer. Say I'm using Cool Edit and I want to view all the tracks separately... how do I accomplish this? I don't understand where my separate lines from the mixer to the computer are or if the computer just splits up the signals from the main outs. I just need a little advice before I go out and buy a soundcard... thanks for any help!

Each input on your soundcard = a seperate track to be recorded all at once.

Your mixer will have a bunch of outputs and whatever output you connect to that sound card input will be what you record on that track.

There are many different options for sending out the tracks from your mixer including- Direct outs, Inserts, Busses and Aux sends. What is best for you depends on the mixer and situation.
 
When you say Cool Edit, make sure it's Cool Edit Pro, which has multitrack capability. Otherwise, you'll end up record only two tracks (L/R) at once. CEP2 does have multitrack view, here you can lay your audio recorded on it's track assigned (eg. Track 1 input : Line 1, Track 2 input Line 2, etc...) so whatever you record in separate track wont mess up another. For example :

Guitar 1--> Mixer channel 1 --> Aux Send 1 --> Soundcard's Line input 1 --> recorded in Track 1 in CEP.

Guitar 2--> Mixer channel 2 --> Aux Send 2 --> Soundcard's Line input 2 --> recorded in Track 2 in CEP.

etc... etc...

the question is more focused toward the mixer... I'm afraid this mixer doesn't have the capability to produce separate tracks... I know little about mixers, but all I see are two aux sends (labeled 1 Mon and 2EFx). With this can I record at least two tracks at once on separate tracks? I just don't know the connection layout and if it even provides this capability. Thanks again.

You can record 4 seperate tracks.

1- Aux Send #1
2- Aux Send #2
3- Left Main Out
4- Right Main Out
