Oh REALLY????
ok i don't even know if you know what i mean, maybe equivalent is a dutch term. BUT, i know now the mackie 1604 has good preamps, but as i'm on a budget(who isn't) i'm trying to find all my stuff used. Now there aren't a lot of mackies lying around waiting for me to buy them ;)
SOOOOOOO, to get to the point.

anyone know an older mixer with the same quality pre-amps?

thanks
guhlenn

ps. i don't care about anything but the pre-amps. I'm new so i gotta learn anyway-> mixing via monitor or actual mixer is the same to me.

If you don't care about the mixer just the pres, why not simply buy the PreSonus M80 (8 pres), or the MP20 (2 pres)...

cause nobody told me!

although this answer will probably push me in the 'sucker' corner, it's true. i need 8 pre's and well everytime i asked they told me that buying the pre's would be far more expensive then buying, well like a mackie.

i 'll look into that though.

thanks Bruce!

hey bruce,

i think i've got a clever question for a change! ;)

Well...

nah i've just got a question:

the M80 has a S/N ratio of >98 dB.
wouldn't that be the limiting step when buying a sound card with higher S/N.
i.e. the few dB more on the sound card are useless?

:) well at least i'm trying to get smart.

though failing miserably

HELLOOOOOHOOOOOOOO,

bruce maybe your rich as hell but i certainly aint!!

that m*****f***er costs $1699 at musiciansfriend. if that's my friend who's....

now as i was saying, do you know a mixer (or preamp if you like) WHICH IS CHEAPER THAN THE MACKIE 1604 has at least 8 preamps which are GOOD at least like a mackie, and can be found second-hand.

sorry bruce didn't mean to be harsh but man i almost fell outa my chair when i saw the cost of the m80.

didn't you read the piece of text saying 'i'm on a budget'?

Well guess it all depends on what your budget is, hey?

greetz guhlenn :(

The Presonus MP20 is about $500 US and you are getting a really high quality preamp that you will still use 15 years from now....in other words, it's a great investment. Check Ebay for a used one, although I don't recommend buying used because you don't get a warranty. The Mackie 1402 has 6 xdr preamps and is less than half the price of a 1604 but it doesn't have direct outs. The advantage of using a mixer instead of a dedicated preamp is that you can use the analog EQ before it hits your recorder if you want and it's usefull to have as a submixer.

Ooopss - guess I kinda glossed over the price point... oh well - they are good pres though!! :D

Sorry Guhlenn........ Wide Awake made a good point though!

Bruce :)

yeah you're both right.
BUT
following you're reasoning i should contact the LARGEST studio i can find, buy it and live happily ever after (which i would;))
unfortunately, this is the real world and i do not have $1700 for preamps. hell i haven't got $1700 in total!
But i can always loan hey? :)

so pleeeeeaaaaaase be a little more "down with the poor people".
ok?

thanks
guhlenn

The Spirit UltraMic preamps are very nice. Quite a few prefer them to the Mackie pres, but ultimately it's down to which YOUR ears prefer. Good luck!

you're being just a little vague here.
please clatify.

Sorry, was talking bout the Spirit series of UltraMic pres that can be found on some of their boards (eg. Spirit Folios, LX7 etc.). Check out their website. Some people find them cleaner and more transparent than the Mackies. I've only ever used a Mackie CFX before, so I'm not really in a position to comment on the VLZ pres against the ones on my LX7. The best thing to do is to go the store and audition them yourself, your ears will tell you all ya need to know!

I KNOW,
problem is that my nearest music shop (the one i spend thousands on guitar+gear so now gives discount to me like i'm a king) thought that the best multitracker would be the yamaha DSP factory...

so now i'm figuring out what i need-> travel like a hundred miles and then buy what sounds best.

but i only wanna travel one time soooo...

ah well, i'm thinking about the hoontech with mic pre's a lot. it's $900 and has a SNR of 120 24/96 and 8 in.

sound sgood to me.

greets guhlenn
