mackie 1220 or firepod?

i was reading on mackie's website that the 1220's firewire output was pre-fader, pre-eq, pre-everything, and the only use for the firewire output was to send all the raw tracks to a computer with no EQ or alteration from the mixer. i noticed that the firepod also does this, but includes 8 preamps instead of mackie's 4. since the pan/EQ on the mackie have no effect whatsoever when sending the tracks to a computer, would i be better off spending $70 more on a firepod, since what i want to do is send individual tracks from a firewire interface to a computer?

If you need 8 pres, it's a no brainer. You have to get the firepod. You can do drums with 4, but sometimes it's not quite enough. The firepod also comes with 2 Hi-Z inputs which can be handy

yeah, i bought the firepod figuring i'd probably use 4 pres for recording drums, but i find myself more often using 5 or 6 mics to get a better sound.


if you plan on mixing inside the box, then you're much better off with the firepod. by bypassing the pan/eq/etc on the mackie, it's basically just sending the files to your computer so you can mix them and pan them using software. so i guess there'd be no point in using the outboard mixer. the firepod will do the same, with twice as many preamps, and take up less space and won't really have any functions that go to waste.
