Macki 1402

Im considering buying a Macki 1402 because of it's reputation and the fact that it has mic pre amps. I presently own a Peavey RQ20 (No pre-amps).

Here's my question: what exactly will this mixer do for me that my current mixer won't?

And what is the real benifit for having mic pre amps?

I'm using a Darla 24 card and I have 2 mics(Peavey PVM 45i 50-16K dynamic, and a Apex 420 Large Dia. 20-20k switchable pattern.

I'm pretty new at this, and still trying to understand this whole home recording business.

That's a tough one, it's really up to what you need to do, and how you do it.

More than a benefit it's essential. If you want to get the weak microphone signal up to a useable level for recording, you must have one. No preamps on the RQ20 or no XLR inputs? I tried finding it on peavey's site but couldn't.

The 1402 will allow you more flexible routing options, and the ability to record at 6 mic inputs at a time. As well, it will provide phantom power for you condensor mic. BTW, what's the APEX like?

Sorry about my typing--my Peavey mixer is a RQ200 not 20, and it does have XLR mic inputs and phantom power, but no preamps and I do have trouble getting my input levels high enough because of, I guess, lack of preamps.

The Apex 420 is a good quality mic at a reasonalbe price.
It comes with a metel case and nice shock mound and can be purchased for $179.

Oh, but the way, I use cakewalk 9.0 and have a Sampsom Q5 headphone amp and I'm having a ball with all these toys.

I just retired not long ago and my wife still works, so I've got lots of time to play.

I use Band in the box for Midi and send it over to cakewalk and then add my Trumpet and My friends Sax parts and they sound pretty good. But I've got a ways to go to make it really good.
