If there is already a thread about this, I apologize and I can just be refered there, but I wanted to know, in general, what are the major advantages and disadvantages of each for home recording and how do they compare? It's very general, but I want general info. I'm looking into possibly getting a laptop, and 50% of the reason is for recording. I hear a lot of recording is gone on G4 laptops, and that macs are more stable, so I just wanted so info on this. Thank you!

yeah, that's a good post...but it wasn't specifically a Mac vs. PC post. Although it did seem to turn into that. The original question that guy had was about the EMac vs. PC. Why don't you tell us what software program you plan on using, what hardware, what exactly you want done with it all.

i bought a mac g5 dual 1.8 processor last week, it was the best purchase i havew made for the studio, except the digi 002 rack/ protools combo. It is amazingly fast ! i put 15 reverb plugins, 7 eq plugs, 5 gates, and 6 compressors throughout the one session on the one song. i wanted to see how it wolud hold up. it bounced down all the files with no prob at all.

i actually have yet to make my mind up on mac vs. pc. I like PC because you customize it to the way you want, updating it is easy, and i'm just used to it. However, I do hear good things about the Mac all the time...but still have yet to be wowed by it. I was just working on PT today and while my session was playing a looped 8 bar phrase and I was zooming out at the same time I kept getting a "CPU can't handle this, increase the buffer size." Kind of annoying when all I wanted to do was zoom out. Anyway...Macs are more expensive however supposedly more reliable. Macs also update with a faster computer and a new OS every 5 months it seems. Which sucks because everyone wants the new version and it just makes what you're using obsolete....plus you get buggy computers when they do that. PCs do have it's own problems too, but they seem to run faster (we're up to what...P4 4.0Ghz..single processor???? at least), you can customize your computer, more user friendly...etc.

Well, I need a good media machine. Video, DVDs, music, and such, and I also want to be able to store and upload all my Digital camera pictures from my Kodak digital camera. I also need a machine that I can use a fast DSL wireless internet with so I can browse and so research for school and write papers as well and make presentations, but mostly I want to be able to mix and record music and run music related programs. I like to play games as well, but I understand that those choices are limited in a mac. As far as specifics to the computer, well thats one of the reasons why I ask. I know that speed varies by machine, and I know mac components are different. So, that there is what I'll be using it for at least. I'd also like to run simple programs like chat programs, etc... but that should be a given. I want to be able to take this machine places too, not just use it at home, so its gotta hold up to a little travel.

My recomendation to you with the above points in mind: A Powerbook laptop.

The video integration is top-notch and many of the big artists who travel and record/perform are using Powerbooks. They are not cheap, but worth it. Video processing sucks 10times the bandwidth of processing music and if you try to do it on the cheap you will just flush money and be disappointed.

(I record with a PC due to the software I prefer, but I also ran a Mac graphic studio and have owned both platforms since 1980.)
