I have a total beginners question hopefully someone will answer for me. I'm completely new to computer recording and am wondering --
how do you hook up a mic or guitar to the computer/ what methods do you use ?

Hooking MIC up to a computer

MICrophone, attached to an XLR cable or 1/4, this goes into a
MIC PRE this gives a line level to receive good audio into puter

(here you can go two ways, depending on your set up) from

MIC PRE into COMPRESSOR then MIXER then AUDIO CARD or
MIC PRE into AUDIO CARD

Within your computer, you should have a sequencer software
PC-CUBASE SX, SL, LOGIC
MAC- DIGITAL PERFORMER, PRO-TOOLS

and if you want to record a guitar into the computer, just put the guitar amp in front of you MIC. A mixer would do well in between COMPRESSOR & COMPUTER, but everyone's different, but you can do without it if you choose too. That's it in a nutshell

Thanks for the info. Do you have any brand/model recommendations for the MIC PRE or AUDIO CARD? thanks

hey... this is for MIC PRE into COMPRESSOR then MIXER then AUDIO CARD or
MIC PRE into AUDIO CARD

^^^^ that signal path isn't very good normall you only want Mic>Preamp>Mixer>soundcard... the compressor and other outboard effects should be put in AFTER you record whatever your recording... It could drastically decrease your signals strength, make it sound bad, or you may have to jack up the volume ALOT to get it to go into the sound card good... try going like this:

Mic > Preamp > soundcard
OR
Mic > Mixer > soundcard
OR
Mic > Preamp > LINE IN ON MIXER > soundcard

then after your done recording play it back and add compression...by this signal path
Out from soundcard> Input of compressor > back into the input of the soundcard.

And my suggestions of A mic, preamp and soundcard would be...
If you want a dynamic mic then get a Shure SM57 or SM58 although the 57 i prefer more... 79.99 retail

If you want a Condesor mic then I'd reccomend an Oktava MK319-99.99 retail

And for a PreAmp I hear the dmp3 is very good but I love my Blue Tube by presonus 99.99 retail... and my joe meek preamps but those are kinda pricey...

And FINALLY a good sound card would be for a beginner the M-Audio Mobile Pre USB - 149.99 retail

Oh and you wanted a compressor? get the behringer composer pro compressor for 89.99

tbx,

Get yourself to a bookstore and look through "Computer Music" and "Music Tech" magazines.

They not only come with CDs loaded with free software, but great beginner articles as well that willl show you how to get started.

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. I actually am not clueless about everything, just clueless on certain beginning points. The ironic thing is I have some musician friends online that are very versed in this stuff, but they always talk way over my head and are arrogant to where I give up on asking them and decided to try here instead. Once I have the preliminary stuff down, I'll be set on the rest of it.
