Mac Soundcard recommendations ?

Hi
my apologies that this has probably been asked before ad naseam.

I'm about to get a Mac G4 to run Logic Express (to replace my Yamaha AW16G) and need a soundcard (with MIDI)
I'm pretty much a newbie to computer recording.

Budget = £250 ($450) approx.
I'm working solo so I guess I don't necessarily need multiple of ins or outs.

I'm keen to avoid USB ( a previous experience :( )
So I'm looking at PCI or Firewire.

I'm after a solid performer with low latency.
 
with respect an amd 64 will blow away a g4.
i'm a computer engr.
if your open minded i'll be happy to detail a computer confign including multitrack sioftware around 1k total that will give you far more performance
and more features than provided by the mac and logic express. if you dont believe me do some detailed research on the track and plug in counts being obtained with amd pc's.

Well I'm getting the G4 'on approval' from a relative for a few weeks.
If I like I can buy really cheap so anything else isn't in the picture.
 
in that case logic express is very limited.
get yourself some decent multitrack software.
hitsquad.com has a list. look under mac software.

Logic Express is perfect for my needs.
As is the G4.

However, if you feel like tossing a soundcard recommendation my way please go right ahead..........although you're starting to sound like a pushy sales guy in Guitar Centre trying to sell me something I don't want..........

I'm running a G4 Dual 867MHz with 768 MB RAM which has never let me down. I run Cubase SL with an M-Audio 2496 soundcard. It's over a year since I bought the card and I haven't had any problems with it at all.

M-Audio is a make I was considering.
That model is well within my budget.
I was considering the Firewire Audiophile.

I don't need a card with preamps as I have a good dual one already.
 
Actually, I just use a little Behringer mixer for recording - it works wonders.
 
The Lynx One card is an outstanding value. 2 in's and outs of VERY good sounding A/D/A's, 2 midi I/O ports, word clock I/O, AES and/or SPDIF I/O

About $450 USD

The drivers are very low latency. Yes, there are Mac drivers for it.

Tech support is still possibly done by one of the owners of the company, and he knows his shit.

A few guys around here have bought this card based on my recommendation. Some had used the "lesser" MAudio cards before that, and they REALLY liked the Lynx One in comparison.

I don't think you can go wrong with it.

If you need 96Khz recording capability, the DAL card is similar in quality, although, I am not sure if it has Mac drivers. Probably does as it has been around for a long time.
 
Hmmmmm...just noticed that the driver is for OS9. You might want to contect them as ask if they plan on a OSX driver, if you are going to be running OSX on your Mac.
 
No one's mentioned MOTU yet?

I think the PCI-324 and 424 is a fine base...less than 1000 for a great do all solution, then you can expand to something that rocks the proverbial casbah. And they're getting cheaper used since the firewire stuff is becoming bigger for them...
