hi all, the singer from my band just aquired a mac performa 6400/200 with os8, and i was wondering if i could ask a few questions? i know very little about mac ive always used pc.
anyway how upgradeable is this and what would we have to do to be able to run protools or steinberg on this or is it even possible? im sorry for such begginer questions. ive never even seen a mac turned on until this one. im fairly sure it is a older one but im hoping it will be able to run some tracks for us. any info or links on this would be greatly appreciated and most helpful. thank you and god bless. tim pate

its only a 200 mhz on the ram i believe it has 32 megs or somthing like that. thanks for the reply.

Then the answer is: Its too slow to effeciently be used as a DAW.
Although not to say it wont work, but it will be limited as far as how many tracks you can do and the effects you use will be very limited because they are CPU dependent. And you would need a minimum of 256mb of ram.

You could try Pro-tools free version and see how far it gets you.

thanks for the speedy replies very appreciated. do you know if it is upgradeable at all and what we should get for it if it is, or should we just scratch it all together and just get a new mac g4 when we can afford it. this was giving to my singer in good working condition because she wantd a mac so bad. thanks alot.

hey, here are some specs. of the machine.
The question is how many tracks do you want to record at once, and what quality do you want. If you're fine with 2 tracks at once, you can use the built in audio input of the mac (cause it's stereo) and download Protools Free at http://www.digidesign.com/ptfree/
If you want more inputs at once or higher audio quality then you could have something like an audiomedia card, or some usb card or even the Digi 001 or similar.
But that machine won't have lots of processing power, so it'll act more as a tracking device with the possibility of just a few real time plug ins.
But try the first one, it's very cheap and could work for you.
Cheers, Andrés
