Hmmm...

First off- Welcome Aboard! :) Hopefully you'll stay a while and learn a lot- which is what I did. There's tons of stuff to learn here and a lot of helpful, friendly folks.

So- that's a decent sized question. I'm a pro tools guy, though, so I'll do my best.

Forgive me if you already know some of this stuff.

Get to know the RTAS (real time audiosuite) plugs and how to use them. In the mix window you can usually see the inserts and sends areas at the top of the channel strip. If you insert an RTAS plugin up in the top section, you can adjust the settings and try out different presets in real time. Your 'Getting Started with the Mbox" manual should have clear and simple instructions for how to do that.

So-on to the plugs. For compression, and maybe even hard limiting, check out the BF76.. Its in the RTAS menu of the mixer (when you go to add and insert) in the Dynamics folder. The ratio buttons are right next to VU meter (4,8,12, & 20 I think). Try 4 or 8 for compression and 20 for limiting. Attack and release controls are the smaller knobs. The input knob is how you set your threshold (watch the meter to see when your signal starts hitting the limiter) and the output know is your make up gain.

I don't like the other compressor and limiter plugs that come with Pro Tools, but check them out anyway.

Sorry- all I have time for at the moment. I hope that at least a little helpful.

Thanks fo the help,im gonna give it a go ill tell u what happens.

Cool.

Echo is called delay in pro tools. The plugs come in several varieties by length of delay (Slap Delay, Short Delay,Medium Delay, Long and Extra Long.) Long and X-Long are for your typical vocal delays that hit on the next beat or later. They all can be synced to the tempo then you select which note value you want it to repeat (eigth note, quarter, half, etc.) If the version of the plug you selected doesn't have the right amount of delay time available it won't let you select the note- try the next up or down in size.

For fun on mono tracks, try the Long Dealy (mono/stereo) or some such. It will make the mono track a stereo track and give you stereo delays. Set the left side for a quarter note and the right for a half note, drop the mix down to 20 on the left and 10 on the right and see how it sounds.

The mix control is way important if you are using the delay as an insert. If the mix is set to %100, which is the default you are ONLY hearing the delay and NOT the original track. It just makes your track seem WAY out of time. Knock the mix down to hear your original track and the echos.

Delays are usually set up as an Aux send, though. The getting started guide *should* cover that and I can't at the moment.

Let us know how it goes. If I don't get back to you right away its because I'm heading out for a motorcycle trip tomorrow morning. Gotta check email for work along the way, and I'll probably stop by here, too.

Take care,
chris
