I'm starting to hear some good buzz about this mic. Anyone tried the puppy yet?

tape op's take

well, there's the tape op review that came in my mailbox saturday...

issue 57... no link yet, but here's some snipped quotes from Joel Patterson's review for y'all: He starts out acknowledging the hype and goes on "...you can't fake the perfect rendering of real live sound...self noise of only 18 dBA...The figure-8 especially has a very tightly focused zone. You could monitor someone getting ready to play and not know it's on, it's that quiet...captured the applause with holographic intensity and the room 'verb with a depth and a "roundedness" that was stunning; it brought you back to that particular room... msrp $699.99"

no mantion of vocals, only accoustic, piano, and room, all good.

I've heard it in a comparison with some other mic's.
I think it was on a different site. Sounded very good.
Seems to be worth the money for sure.

...just got mine last week. So far, only used it on a Flute track and a small guitar amp track, both in cardioid mode.

Guitar track was nice, but the flute track was incredible... tons of life and detail without having to fight with placement. Can't wait to try it on vocals.

Yeah i have been looking into one....i will say from what i herd, this thing can be compared to some mics costing twice the Price

I've been eyeing one for a while. Everything I have read about it seems to be good.

Wish I'd waited on the Sputnik..

I bought a Solaris last year and really like it; it's a heckuva mic for less than 3 bills...

does anyone know who actually manufactures the m-audio mics in china? is it alctron, 797, etc? that will tell some of the story of how well it's actually built, for example, and how it's capsule rates.

After a fair bit of end user experience, I place 797 design, build quality, capsule performance, and consistency somewhat higher than alctron's. although alctron makes some nice ribbon mics, just that they have that same alctron resonant body design and crappy mesh grilles and annoying transformers.

I'm running from memory here, so don't quote me on it please, but tha'ts my opinion on it after using SP B1 mics compared to apex 435 and 460 and 180 mics, for example. I wish I knew which factory makes cad m177/179/m9 mics though, cuz they're at a level on par with the best of SP's 797 made mics, which sort of makes me wonder if those cads are 797 built as well. I've heard that some of the newer more expensive cad mics are built by alctron though, and their design is certainly much improved over the build design of older alctron mics, so I guess my generalizations aren't necessarily correct.

Never mind this post, just meanderings in the early morning! I'm probably completely off base.

Cheers,
Don

Sputnik

Just finished my first recording this past weekend using the Sputnik. In a word, amazing. As someone else said, I can't believe how focused this mic is in terms of what sounds it collects. The Sputnik was an upgrade purchased from an albeit crappy MXL. But, setting the two mics side by side, it was incredible how much room noise the MXL picked up. Any little noise was picked up and part of the recording. On the Sputnik, NO room noise was audible, only what was directly in front of the mic. The vocals recorded with it were rich, warm, and smooth. With a decent preamp and pop filter, we got great results.
