I intend to buy this mike soon so am just wondering if anybody has got eperience with it. What are thE pros an cons of this mic

No personal experience but here's a pretty positive review from SOUND ON SOUND, a review source I tend to trust.

Cons? M Audio are a company more known for audio interfaces than microphones (or speakers for that matter). As per the review, their mics are made for them by a Chinese company. The other potential con is that M Audio have just been bought out by Digidesign/Avid and it's a bit unclear what plans there are for the product range in the future.

I haven't the Sputnik but I do have the Luna and Solaris microphones from Maudio and they preform for me well above what their price range should dictate.

Perhaps a question would be, what do you intened to use it for and what is your budget?. Are you open to suggestions of other mics?

I've got a Sputnik and love it. Picked it up in March for like $550 new. It's pretty warm naturally so that really comes in handy. The only thing I don't really like it on is hand-picked acoustic! I mainly use it for vocals and interviews, and it always performs well.

Probably the only weird thing about this mic is the price. There is literally about a $300-$400 price range difference on the web depending on where you buy it from. That being said, if you can pick it up for like $500-$650 new I'd definitely get it. However, if you're gonna pay more than that, I'd look at other options as well because there are other nice mics at that range.

You should take into consideration that M-Audio no longer make this mic, nor much at all since it was sold off by Avid. Looking at their website, their whole pro audio line has just evaporated. And no support it seems, as far as gearslut chatter goes. Shops must be selling end of line stock. I have a Sputnik I bought about 5 years ago - very nice too. It started giving me some noise trouble a month before the warranty expired and I got it replaced in the nick of time. Been great since. However, if I was looking for a new mic now I personally would probably look elsewhere. There's something unnerving about buying an expensive product from a fragmented company that appears to be figuring out what to do next. Just my 5c.
