M-Audio O2 Controls

I just got the M-Audio O2. It is my first midi device (I finally got tired of programing drums and bass through the piano roll :). By doing some searching here on the board, I found out how to assign the 8 fader nobs to control the volume of different tracks in Sonar. But I still cannot figure out how to assign the 8 programmable buttons (the ones labeled C12-C19). The manual this thing came with seems like it is in a different language. Any O2 users out there?
 
Another question....is there difference in performance using the usb cable rather than using midi cables?
 
I contacted M-Audio and I didn't get any further. They gave me instruction on how to assign keys to midi CC? I just want to know how to make a button be the record button.
