hello all
so i just bought and set up my new m-audio firewire 1814.
upgrading from a soundblaster live

i dont have studio monitors, but klipsh thx 4.1 system

all is fine, but the subwoofer just won't play.
i checked everywhere, from the 1814 manual, to its virtual control panel, to my windows sound system thing

any help??

thanks

Take the demo of PowerDVD, in case you don't have it, and make a quick test with de Audio Setup at "4 Speakers" in powerDVD.

Load a movie with dolby 5.1 or something, and check.

I guess you're using SPDIF right?.

If it works. Try to check the software in wich you're trying to hear your 4.1.

WinAMP?, Media player?, i don't know.

im not using spdif
im just outputing normally through 1 and 2 on the 1814.

well, i outputted through one of the headphone jacks (there are two on the 1814)... and the subwoofer worked.

how interesting.

why doesnt it work through the outputs?

problem now is... i have to use a splitter to split the headphone signal, so i can here left and right.

The stereo output in the back is just the same as the headphone in the front.

Got to be something you're not doing right.

Remember that the headphone output in the front, is "1/4 Stereo"

If you want to do the same with the output in the back, you have to use that splitter on outputs 1 & 2 in the back.

It should works, i don't think the unit has anything do with the subwoofer function.

Check your connection ( the problems is outside not in the control panel of the 1814 or windows or macos or whatever ) stay away from the OS.

lovely suggestions underp

the headphone is of course stereo (trs jack)... but the outputs in the back are actually tr jacks, arent they?

that must be why my subwoofer isnt being read.

the splitter will resolve this ?

Outputs in the BACK are MONO.

All you need to do, is ROUTE channel 1 to one side, and channel 2, to the other side.

RIGHT and LEF.

My GOD, How hard could it be ? .... i'm going to shoot you seriously :D

haha
you can shoot me now
because im having some serious trouble trying to figure all this out

so i plugged my two 1/8 jacks that come from my speaker system, into a splitter (or in this case, a unifier ha), and plugged that single jack into headphone jack 2 of my 1814.

doing this, made my subwoofer work lovely.

now i use headphone jack 1 for its intended purpose.

all is fine i guess.
but i would really like to use the thing correctly... using the outputs in the back.

thats what i dont get how to use.

i dont get what you mean when you say route the things.

i tried using the same splitter thing i did, and plugging it in the output jack, but the sub didnt work and the sound was mono.

You won't have rear channels with this. You have to mix the two 1/8 jacks to 1 single jack.

If you want rear channels, you will have to use SPDIF.

ahhhh
now i get it.
that diagram was great.

tomorrow i'll buy the proper splitter.

so how would i use spdif for the rear channels?
i really need them.

(my plug is 1/8 inch, not the rca by the way)

Nice!
Not the pretties diagram ever, but it got the point across...
lol

so basically maudio 1814 does not support 4.1, 5.1 or 7.1 sound systems.
unless there is a nice way to work around it, which i doubt.

so i'll never have true surround sound as my 4.1 system intends.
but i can have simple stereo with a subwoofer if do the tricks.

Without getting to technical HERE....

It doesn't really matter if you leave your rear channels unplugged.

You're hearing to STEREO music & sounds most of the time.
Your MP3s don't come in dolby surround, they are STEREO.
you're not missing anything.

SPEAKER KITs, like the one you have... are designed for MOBO integrated soundcards. If you check the back connectors of the integrated soundcards, you'll see they come with 3 1/8 female connectors.

Front ( LEFT - RIGHT )
Rear ( LEFT - RIGHT )
Bass/Center.

----------

1814 does not come with this connectors.

If you want to take advantage of DOLBY with the 1814, you need a Surround KIT with built-in DiGital Decoder.

In other words. A kit with "SPDIF IN". So you can plug the SPDIF out from your 1814 to your Dolby Speakers.

Then you'll have true Dolby Surround 5.1 like you want, watch movies or whatever.

A piece of advice: Don't use 1814 for this purposes. Treat the card like an equipment exclusive for music recording. How the hell you're going to use a 500$ soundcard for everyday use, just hearing the DING DONGS in windows and welcome sounds of VISTA or XP ?

That's very unprofessional.

ah, all makes sense now.
excellent. thanks again underp.

well, since i installed the 1814 two days ago.... i've been using it for everyday use. which consists of having it turned on about 10 hours... recording some guitars... listening to mp3's... and watching some dvd's.

besides being unprofessional, which i don't care about too much, do you think i can harm the thing?
the only reason i can see that could harm it is it being turned on for so long.
10 hours, everyday.

(all my audio sounds SO MUCH BETTER with it than the soundblaster)
