Thinking of getting a M Audio Firewire 410 Soundcard

Does anyone know if i can plug a microphone directly into it and get a decent level?

I will be recording guitars and voices 1 at a time, I dont need a mixing desk before going into the M-Audio device do I? Its just for home use , nothing professional

thanks

Mike

You will not need a mixing desk before the M-Audio unit

If you plug the Mics in via the XLR inputs in the front they will be going through the on board preamps which will bring the levels up if you are using a condenser mic it will also provide phantom power.
If you plan on using an SM57 or 58 or similar dynamic mic for quiet sources like vocals (unless you are screaming your vocals) recording be prepared to turn the gain on the pre amp pretty much all the way up. (this will be true with pretty much any audio interface)

If you plug into the rear input 1/4" jacks then you by pass the preamps so could be used if you are going in direct with instruments.
