Hello, i think i want to buy a USB interface (M-Audio Fast Track USB)

Whats the sound quality for this product?

poor, good, buy it!

Also does it have latency?

I have no personal experience with that product, but if it were my money, I'd spring for the Fast Track Pro. I own the Tascam US-122, which is a comparable product and I like it.

I still say stay away from usb stuff, but its just my opinion. :)

Why not PCI?

I got one a few weeks ago and returned it the next day because i was dissapointed. It sounded fine and it came with ableton live, but dont get it if you want to use its "amp modeling" for guitar. I recorded some vocals with it that sounded good but the guitar effects were terrible. i returned it and got a guitarport.

stay away from usb with anything recording related . spring for Firewire or Usb 2.0 .

The fast track would be fine if you just want some basic recording. Sample rate maxes out at 48khz so if you decide you want to record at 88.2 or 96 it's not going to work. Also not sure if you can only record one input at a time. I know with the Fast Track Pro and Firewire Solo you don't have that limitation. They both also run at 24/96. I doubt you'd have latency issues with most stuff on the market these days and m-audio makes some fairly good low cost interfaces so it shouldn't be a problem. If you did have latency it would likely be the settings in your software and not the interface.

As for the amp modeling, Ableton Live accepts VST and AU plugins so any good modeling options should work in it as well. Wouldn't expect much from any free ones it comes with though. What software are you planning on using?

It has no phantom power either. I bought one, and it gathers dust in a drawer. It's only advantage is that it is tiny and you can chuck it in a bag if you want to work in a hotel room with a laptop.

I'd go for something else personally.
