M-Audio DMP3 or Studio Projects VTB1?

I think I'll have to go with VTB-1 at this point, looks like it has more flexibility, and for 99 bucks it's not a problem to get a second one for stereo on the accoutics or micing drums. My main goal is to record electric guitars (no tube coloring) and vocals (slight tube color) and then plug in the bass direct (tube smoothness) so this will work just fine.

I have a kinda nasaly thin voice and the tube warmth will be nice, also nice for thickening up things if needed. It looks like it has a lot more wiring configuration flexibilty than the DMP3.

Please forgive my ignorance, but which companies make the DMP3 and the VTB-1? I'm trying to learn about pres and looking at full compass, but struggling a bit.

I don't have the VTB1, so I cannot comment on that. I have a DMP3 and a JoeMeek 3Q-whatever-it-was-called.

You probably want something with compression and maybe some "musical EQ" for a bass DI. At least, I tend to us the JoeMeek for this purpose, when playing my bass (Yamaha TRB5II freetless with active pickups). The compression can warm up the track a bit and also ensure a smooth(er) sustain, if that is what you need.

I have 2 VTB-1's, and 2 DMP-3's, they both work well for that price range. As stated before, the DMP-3 is a 2 channel pre, so that may come in handy down the road. But if you're just looking for a single channel, best bang for you buck, with good features,.. Then the VTB-1 is hard to beat (Especially if you can get it for 88 bucks! )
