you need xlr to 1/4" adapters.

each signal chain needs it's own input.

so what exactly is the difference between like midi and xlr or trs inputs?

wait my stupid ass just realized that there are other inputs on the 2496... well at least i think they are... if someone can look at a pic of the soundcard and tell me they are the two red and two white inputs.. are these the SPDIF and Analog Outs? can connect my preamp to these and record into them and have my monitors connected to the two RCA's?

Plugs and connectors

yeah the picture.

the black cable:
RCA the two small black jacks/plugs are SPDIF/digital IN/OUT and the larger round black plugs are your MIDI.

RCA jacks on the card are:
The Red/White are RCA for Analog IN and a pair for Analog Out.
These Red/White outs go to your BX8 Monitors.

Depending on your mixer, you can run your mixers "line outputs" to your card.
(for example your PreAmp left and right outputs could plug into the card Inputs)

If your mixer has SPDIF you could run it into the SPDIF Inputs. Which is technically better than analog.

You may want to read abit more or even familiarize yourself with connectors names by going to a Parts shop. Also Crutchfield.com has a little dictionary page that briefly explains alot of these "tech" things.

ok i get it now... but one thing im not using a mixer... i just use the mixer on Cool Edit Pro... the signal goes through my preamp then straight into my soundcard... my preamp is a MIC200 it has one XLR and TRS in and one XLR and TRS out... ok so ill hook up my monitors to the re/white outs, but what should i connect my preamp to? and will i need to use two out cables running from my preamp one for left and one for right?

MAuDio

you'll run your PreAmp Outputs to your card using 1qty cable.
One method is to use the "red/white-RCA" inputs on the card.

So you can buy a cable for the PreAmp to the Card.
Suggestion: TRS/1/4" to RCA plug.
TRS/PreAmp and the RCA/2496...

Your PreAmp is Single channel or Mono. You don't need to worry about stereo outs from the Preamp. The PreAmp outs are the same signal.
Your card will have one channel empty now...one RCA jack IN/Left not used.

However?,.... :)
You could also use a cheap rca cable splitter and apply the same signal to both IN/left and IN/right rca on the card... So your PreAmp out would plug top the splitter, then the splitter would plug into the red/white rca plugs on the card.
:::rca female to double rca male (radio shack).
This could be cool as you could for example, lay down a Vocal clean track into one track/Right and then have the 2nd or Left track come in and apply effects...kind of a simulated stereo.
