M-Audio BX8's vs. Wharfedale 8.2

I need some help. I cant decide on whether to buy the wharfedale 8.2s or the BX8s. I have heard good things about both, especially the wharfeys, but i have also heard that the BX8s have a better low-end response, plus they have larger woofers. Good bass is important as i will be mixing hip hop songs (i am recording vocals over purchased beats, so the beats should already be eq'ed). Can someone PLEASE help me out here? :confused:
 
The BX-8's work pretty good for me. Pleanty of bass. I havent used the 8.2's so I cant compare tho.
 
I don't make "genre specific" reccomendations too often, but in your case I'd go with the BX8's... They're a little more "crispy" sounding, which may keep you from making your mixes too crispy sounding.

The Wharfies are much more... natural (?) sounding for the most part and much less "hyped" which may cause a little over-hyping in the mixing stage.
 
so you think BX8's would be better for hip hop, and wharfeys better for... i unno.. country music?
 
I think either one would be fine for anything IF you take the time and care to get used to them.

But for music that is normally on the "hyped" side (hip-hop, metal, etc.), a speaker that's slightly more "hyped" sounding may help keep the engineer from going overboard.
 
I think ive decided ill get the BX8s... is it worth getting a sub with it?
 
I have the BX8's....they carry plenty of bass. You don't need a sub. If you get a sub, you'll probably end up not putting enough bass in your mix and it will sound thin.
 
I use the BX5's and I am in hog heaven with those bad boys. They rule. So, as you can see, I lean toward the M-Audio stuff.
 
I'm looking to get some better Monitors myself. Before I found this Home Recording site I got suckerd in to some behringer truths. :mad: :rolleyes:
I wan't to get a decent pair of monitors now and am not sure if the BX8's or Wharfedales are going to be an upgrade or just a crossgrade.
Also, I was told that the wharfedales are the best monitors under $800.00, are you guys saying that the BX8's are also up there with the Wharfedales?
 
without having any experience with the wharfies, but lots with the BX8s, i'll venture to say that they are in the same league. you generally get what you pay for with pro audio equipment, with some obvious exceptions, of course.

the BX8s will naturally be more bass heavy due to the larger driver (8" vs 6.5"). The BX8s offer more tweakability for room settings.

Some may argue that one will "translate" better than the other. Really, you just need to learn the speaker and practice. Your mixes will eventually translate, else, something f'd up.

This is my first post; sounds like an awesome forum though. Anyway, I'm hoping for some opinions on the same question. I had a listen to both of them at guitar center today, and my initial impression was that the KRKs sounded a bit flatter than the BX8s. The low end in the BX8s sounded a little more hyped than in the RP8s, but then again it was inside a guitar center, so you never know exactly what the room is doing to the sound. Anyway, I've heard you can get the KRKs for around $320, which sounds like an awesome deal. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Are you serious, where!? I thought the RP8's were like $500.00.

i had a demo set once from GC for $375...like used.
 
I own a pair of the BX8's - I think they are an excellent choice. Very flat sound, though some say they have a slight peak in the upper-mid section, which is probably true. Not a problem though. I also have a pair of Yamaha PA speakers which I use to sometimes listen through music on along with the BX8's. When I turn on the Yamaha's with the BX8's, it adds a MUCH fuller sound, a lot more focused low end - when I turn them off, the BX8's alone sound a little thin, but they're probably perfect (because you want a flat sound out of monitors). Anyway, my vote is for the BX8's, I love them.

though my ears don't like it...

i've read its a good thing for the "mid's" to be well pronounced.
because thats where the most critical freq area is ..vocals etc.
i have some JBL ~$600 set, that has IMO...the hyped mids.(ear bleed)

but then i think maybe thats what better monitors will sound like? their not supposed to sound like long throw hi-fi speakers designed to reflect off walls etc..? :confused:

flat... room flat, speakers flat...stanleys flat.

for the price the BX8, damn good deal, matched amp and decent power built in, with speakers.......active crossover? how can you go wrong? $300..geez.

the RP8' are twice the price almost?? You got to take 'em home if you can, that was my best learned advice. that 10% extra effort made a big difference in deciding.

8" your probably needing stands and ~5 to 6ft or 2mm away? probably don't need a sub much unless your hip-hoppin or recording Whale noises.
altho a sub can remove some of the workload from the speaks...

i have a question real quick for anyone with BX8's... to attach the monitors to my soundcard will i need a seperate cable for each monitor? I need to know so i can decide on which soundcard to get... i want to get the audiophile 2496 but it only has 2 XLR and 2 RCA jacks.. one XLR input will be used for my mic which only leaves one left... and i wasnt sure if i could use RCA to TRS cables to connect my monitors.. anyone?

Yes. You'll need a seperate cable for each monitor.
2qty cables. Left & Right speakers.
BX8 accepts 1/4" type or XLR type is accepted on the speakers.
Yes. You could use 2qty RCA to 1/4"...~10-12ft. cables.

The Audiophile 2496 has RCA outputs (Left & Right).
There are Midi plugs and SPDIF and Analog Out.
I didn't see any XLR on the 2496?
I think you'll be needing a Mixing board with this setup.

Your email is confusing??
Your MIC input doesn't have anything to do with your card outputs or speaker inputs??

2496 OUTs go to BX8 INs, red is right, left is white.

maybe i'm not understanding you fully? but hope this helps.

BTW, BX8's ....price is fabulous for 130watt, AMP and speakers with 56/80/100 hz filter cut...Linkwitz crosses...
after cutting that $100 off, they've really shown well
to its new price class.

they ain't Ureis,Westlakes, or V8's
...but for $300, damn..that appears to be a wow!-deal.

look forward to your reviews of the 8's.
 
ok my fault i thought those midi inputs were XLR... well in that case... how to i connect my preamp to my soundcard, then to the monitors? my preamp only has XLR ins and outs... also, when im recording to the 2496 will i need to connect the preamp to both of the inputs one for left and one for right? or will it record to both with just one cable? i need help...
