Could anyone tell me if I need a preamp for the audiophile usb for a condensor mic? It doesn't seem obvious in the literature. If not, is this piece of kit ok?

Almost all condensor mics require phantom power, which this box doesn't have. It **is** a preamp, but doesn't have a lot of features. You can get outboard phantom power boxes (in fact, a friend of mine gave me a four-channel one) but, if you haven't already put out the bucks for it, you might look for something in the same price range that include the power. The Edirol UA-25 is $240US, and includes 2 channels of phantom power, MIDI ports, a headphone jack, and connects via USB.

Tascam Us-122

The TASCAM US-122 has phantom power and will allow you to record 2 channels at once. It usually sells for around $199. It has a direct monitoring feature, with level control, that allows you to hear real time audio as you record, and a line out level control and line in/guitar selector switches on each channel.

A very nice little box.
