Any inputs on this little unit?

Anyone actually used this..please mention pc type too.

i think theres 2 analog, 1 midi, 1 spdif. i swore of usb products a long time ago so i've never used it

per your request

Coolcat,

Read my other post (titled "Help me resolve USB .... issue) to gain some info. I now own this unit. I have not yet begun an actual recording session (I'm starting tomorrow) to tell you the ups or downs of the USB Audiophile, but I believe it will do what I need it to do - work with my Dell laptop computer, PIII 650, running Windows 98se, Sonar 1.3.1.

My unit shipped with a couple of free light versions of software - Reason "Adapted", and Ableton Delta Live. Included in my unit were two registration papers for both companies that allow you to upgrade to the full version at a supposedly greatly reduced price. For example, if I want to I can now get the full version of Reason for $299. Is that good? You must take advantage of their offers before, like, August 31st, 2004, i think. Neither are of importance to me, because I'm a composer... not an arranger of other people's track ideas, but that's another topic altogether.

Anyway... the very nice thing about Sonar is that I can play both MIDI and Audio tracks while recording at the same time. And the USB Audiophile allows for input monitoring (as does Sonar), and headphones jack. Personally, I have just finished orchestrating a dozen tracks for a modern composition, the sounds come from my Kurzweil K2500XS synth, and I want to now get the composition onto a CD.

If all goes well from here on, I hope to have my first CD draft to send to some other respected musicians for their critiques by the end of next week.

:)

Hi guys,

I own my M-Audio Audiophile USB for a few months now and I'm really dissapointed by it's ASIO drivers. After installing the lastest drivers, restarting my pc and turning on the box at first sight, everything seems fine. But when I open Cubase SX or WaveLab and I select the Asio driver my system crashes and my screen turns blue and I get a memory fallout message. Now I have 1 gig of Ram so that shouldn't be a problem. My main system is a 2.8MHz, Pentium 4 Dell, with Windows XP and I also tried it on my older 350MHz Pentium 3 with 256 MB Ram still running on Windows Millenium (Don't laugh, I know) and my 800Mhz laptop running on XP Home but I get the same problem with all computers.
The MME driver works fine and the audio quality is really nice though. As I'm a dj, I still record my dj sets on my laptop using this card, but not being able to use the ASIO drivers with Cubase makes this card useless.. :(

Am I the onlyone with this problem and is there a solution for this?

Greetz,
Ralphi

ASIO support

Ralphi,

'Sorry to hear your having difficulties. It makes me wonder too, since I am right now thinking of buying an upgrade to Sonar v.2 on Ebay (that Cakewalk no longer sells), because Cakewalk people told me that v.2 can use the ASIO drivers that my v.1 cannot.

I'd hate to buy the upgrade and find it to be useless.

I took the USB back. The software pack that came with it was sht/crap and
had a marketing bug to were it wouldn't allow any SAVE with the Demo. Of course they tried selling you the real sht for $400!! imagine that...and their web page sucked too.

Been reading and reading tonight and the pc-lock/ups and crap..daang.
I just don't get to excited about the pc recording other than the Pro set-ups.

even then....
One guy had a paying $$$ band and his DMA PC SQ-Address flip flopped and he's.. well he's basically fhkd with 14 songs lost in hard drive hell..or was it IRQ hell...maybe it was dfrag hell...no wait it was .......uh...uh..
uh....latency hell.

CoolCat,

I made some posts on the USB Audiophile after I sold it, about a month after having it. I ended up switching to the PCI version, bought a new Dell Desktop, upgraded my sound recording software, spent a total of about $1700 to be able to record my "world class best thing ever thought of" song (insert smile here), and....

Since then, I have seen more and more disappointment posts about USB items.

But, my new gear kicks ass, and then some.

Spend some time researching, and hopefully you have the bucks needed to get what you should have.

coolcat. i dont like usb. i'm a puter engr.
get whats proven. a pci sound solution.
search under my name for recommendations. ive made thousands of them.

thanks for the posts...USB sucks that much?
Even the Tascam USB too?
you see I never got full trial, and I wasn't going to waste time recording
and not be able to mix/burn on the M-Audio Delta free (doesn't work) software..

USB is great for calculators I guess. :)

I don't know the whole pc thing...geez, noisy.

the screen's
there all so fhkng busy....why do they cram so much sht on the screen?

who has a plain jane, 2 screen...Track screen and Mixdown...

whats the simplest recording/multitracking software... I mean if screw up,
i'll play it again...I don't need nano-micro editing functions on a wave point the size of an ants penus.

hell, I burp while I sing. who cares!

coolcat, at the risk of being jumped on. as ive mentioned it so many times.
as i said before many times. there are many user folks running powertracks (48 tracks - 49 bucks) from pgmusic.com with delta 44 or 1010 sound cards
(PCI ! - NOT USB). just try the demo. another i would look at is multitrackstudio.com. a superb recording software imho. but powertracks has more extensive midi features imho. on the other hand multitrackstudio does exactly what you say. one main screen basically and easy few menus.
just try the demo of multitrackstudio. if were me i would get both. powertracks for all the midi features, and lots of neat built in fx and multitrackstudio as well maybe.

Which USB soundcard would you recommend? I don't have a choice, I must go with usb because I'm using with a laptop.

I don't want PCMCIA cards like Layla because I want to be able to use the card on a desktop too.

legacy. i would look at a firewire solution if possible.
but a word of caution....do some research...talk to lots of people.
i would start a new thread on this issue and get a number of opinions.
on what works.
the problem your facing is only recently have laptop tecgnology become powerfull.
eg amd 64 laptops .
if you have a slow hard drive in your laptop this is probably not going to do the job. it would help to post your laptop configuration.
the problem is people are often naively picking up older laptops cheap and expecting them to run lots of tracks and plug ins, and record multiple simultaneous tracks. this can be problematic.

checking it out now
