LX-20 woes

A few month ago, I bought a used LX-20 with 160 hours. The first four tapes I used were Maxell and TDK, and around the third one, I began getting high error rates and some nasty audio. So, I got an HHB ADAT tape, thinking poor tape was the culprit. Everthing was fine for the first 2 hours of mixing from the HHB, but then the high error rates came right back.

I think I need to get it serviced, but before I do, can someone give me some opions?

thanks,

Adam

A thorough cleaning would be advisable before anything else...

I guess I didn't expect a cleaning so soon. I was under the impression that it wasn't normally needed so often, but perhaps the previous owner was a pig. Or maybe I am.

Dude, if those TDK and Maxell tapes are VCR tapes, that might be your problem!!! Never, ever use a VCR tape. They have a much rougher surface than the tapes you should use and they will wear out the head faster. Also, I would stay away from the hhb tapes as well, as I haven't had any good experience with these. I recommend a good head cleaning cassette. This is a DRY cassette specifically for adats. 3M makes one. They are about $20. I recommend buying BASF 40 minute tapes for the lx-20. These work the best!

good luck
