Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
This is The final of Turn The Page with Lt. Bob's cool sax. After i sent him the tracks, my whole hard drive crashed. I had to reconstruct the song track by track around the CD he sent me back...so its different than the first version by far.

Chris Harris (the mean and unforgiving guy that he is:D) put his foot down and demanded that I sing the high parts at the end, which were totally out of my range. Fool that I am, I did what he asked---ouch! No pitch transpose, no autotune...beware of shredded tonsil projectiles...

This one's for Sam.

You guys sound fantastic on this one!

The sax is sweet in the beginning and throughout

Crawdads voice is very fitting in there.

Great job guys... 5 stars on this one!

Very good song to pick also!

Wow..........sounds good man. You did a great job of backward engineering here. I think your new tracks are better than the first ones you sent me, especially the vox. OK....I'm sitting here waiting for the high parts.......wait for it...........not yet........
oops; I'm a little sharp there......vocals are definitely better than the first ones...here's the high part ....dammit; I'm sharp there also......hey Dad, you vocals sound fine through there. I don't know how they felt; but they sound good.
Good job my friend. Another crawdad production I'm proud to be on.

WOW!!!

fantastic! Better than the first! I was running out the door and I just happened to catch this, and now I am late! :D

I'll comment in greater detail later, just wanted to give you guys a quick comment before I left..

great version!

thanks!

be back later..

Well if it isn't Al Carmichael and his sidekick Steven...

And what's this? Another great performance?

Indeed...

So I think the hi hat needs to be beat down about 3 dB and panned a little harder to either side. Nice touch around 3:05 Steve...good tension. Al, these vocals are beautiful...very nice job as always.

Great cover, very well mixed and performed....nice and dramatic like!

I'm glad you added the high part at the end! you guys definitely did this justice.. the recording sounds great too.. pretty much the only critique I could add would be to leave the sax naked at the beginning.. I like all the other changes, but I didnt like the very first cymbal.. I'm pretty sure the original starts with just the sax..

top notch as expected.. I listened several times already.. I like the organ.. just great.

thanks for the tune man!

Wow,great job!
The LT's sax just makes it soar!

Bob Seger would appreciate this.
Iv'e been listening to this song since it came out,and it's always been a subtle,(or not so subtle),bust on the country verses rock attitude.
Obviously,it just ain't true!
A country boy can rock with the best of them!:D

A truly great rendition, not a copy, another take just as fine as the original!

I really enjoyed it,thanks guys!

Happy Holidays,
Pete

As I recall, I had exactly one criticism of the first tracks you posted...and I believe that issue has now been handled very nicely :D (sounded like it didn't even hurt!!

And Lt. Bob...If you played anything "sharp," it's b/c we've all heard the live version of this tune for the past 25 years...it's SUPPOSED to be played just a hair sharp in up there in the alps. (I will assume that's why I didn't notice :D.)

Man, Al...I'm really glad you took another run at that ending...I can usually listen to your stuff on loops for long periods of time, but the ending on the previously "comfortable" version just caught my attention every time. Now I can loop away. And I do definitely know what a ball-buster this tune is in full voice...just trust me when I say "nice job.".

Man, part of this almost reminds me of Floyd...it's like a really cool amience going on with the sax almost in the background before it busts through the door.

"Home Recording" is a lot different for Crawdad than it is for me. I'd be thrilled to get results like this after shelling out $60 an hour. Hey Crawdad...do you record anybody else?

I'd write more, but I think if I hurry, I can reach that pinnacle of pinnacles...the (1,000th post) before I have to go get food.

mr. "automatic"

dear chessrock's hero,

It's odd, but there are absolutely no surprises here. That's because we've come to expect the best of the BEST from you, and you deliver that EVERY TIME. It's useless for me to try and capture what this song does to my ears with the written word. Just understand that the thumb is up :D the "thumb" on my hand :D (I won't say anything about what it does to the "heart", cuz that's against the macho code-of-ethics  )

Sounds like you finally got some drum sounds you can live with, eh? They sound pretty dang good. Your recordings reflect an obvious understanding that each instrument has a part to play... the acoustics would sound great by themselves, for instance, but they're probably below -12db each... your mixing and arranging skills are unquestioned here.

Oh, listen to those vocal highs! It's extra cool to hear you hit those notes; your voice is familiar now, almost, so hearing you stretch like that is a treat.

AND THAT SAXOPHONE PATCH? WONDERFUL :p :)

Hopefully we yung-uns here can be as cool as the more "experienced" like Steve & Al here when we're "turning the page", and hopefully this clinic will still be here for us all.

(no offense, old guys :D)

As always, thanks to everybody for the listen. I very much appreciate that--and I've not been able to put in much time on responses myself lately. Gigging 5 nights a week and trying to finish 8 pieces of music for the Detroit Auto Show during the days has left me lacking in free time. I finished this a little here and a little there just to remind myself that I still do stuff for fun occasionally!

JMarcomb--and you're the first one I will be listening to! Thanks for the stars too! I always liked this song, but the more I got into recording it, the more I realized how good and timeless it really is. I can listen to Turn The Page forever, it seems, and not get tired of it. And, Lt. Bob is such a tasteful musician, he raises the quality of everything he graces with his talents.

Lt. Bob--hey, it my honor to have your playing on this. And screw that sharp stuff! Call it art, call it soul...its perfect!

B. Sabbath--So, did it sound like you think it would when you suggested the cover? I like this version better than the first too. I got to live with what I did first time around and tried to get a better feel and vocal. Ohh- the sax all alone would be cool at the top! I might mess with that if I have some time.

SluiCe--thanks for the comments, my friend. Hi hat? Yeah, I know what you mean. Those damn things are so hard to judge in a mix--they vary so from song to song, but I think I agree with you. I have some mixing questions and comments for you, but I'll PM you when I get a chance.

Museman--Lately, I don't know WHAT I am--country, rock, blues, classical, jazz, hip-hop--Celtic folk music? The older I get, the more it all just becomes music--all valid--all interesting avenues to explore. Anyway, I'm glad you liked this version. Me and a friend had this idea about ten years ago--a heavy metal country band called the "Boy Cows". I swear, they are about to emerge!

ChrisHarris--well you did me a favor on those vocals. I didn't think there was ANY way I could hit them, but when I got to that part, I said screw it! I'm gonna get 'em somehow. I was actually very surprised that I came as close as I did!

I record other people from time to time.

Thanks again, everybody!

I really...... really...... really......loved the clean yall had on that. I hope I can one day be able to get headed in that direction. Beautiful picking on all the instruments. That voice is superb!

Should be a header at the top of this bbs....

this sounds perfect. i don't have a copy of the song but it's scary to think that the quality of this recording is probably better than the original. anyone comparing?

and as a bonus for me......you ridded the song of the creatures from space sounds!

so glad you hit the vocal peaks as well.

thanks guys for all your posts here, makes me work harder.

........Great stuff as always man. .......clean and heartfelt, like this song should be. .......and as far as those high vocals go, they dont even sound like a struggle for you. We'll be expecting your new extended range on every song from here on out. Before too long, you'll be covering vince gill songs:D :)

I had a couple of questions about the mix. Did you use a different mic for lead vocs on this then youve used in the past? Or, maybe different pre/pre setting?...... It sounds hotter in the high mids......not a bad thing, just different. And, there's a phase thingy goin on w/ the cymbals in some areas..... just a nit. ......cause its a great recording.

Steve........ "he shoots, he scores" :)

Great job fellas........ A very nice cover!

G w/ a Big Crawdaddy 5

Participant, Tokai987, erichenryus, guernica, and anybody else I missed--thanks for listening and for the great comments. I almost feel...uh...gee...young again!

Guernica--that mic was an Oktava 219. I may have added some high mids to it. Have to look at the file. The cymbal thing is some extreme compression. I was trying for that old Beatles thing where they ran the cymbals through a Fairchild or something and made 'em bloom.

Actually I didn't add any high's to the overall mix, but I sure did take a bunch of low end out. Its weird--even when I record everything flat, I end up with this low end fuzziness and muck that masks everything. So I have to play with that. Too much can make everything sound bright, even when its flat. Ah, frequencies--a whole lifetime study.

And yes--I killed the aliens! All of them! Put the new toys away! May you all live long and prosper. WARP SPEED STEVIE! To the Ray Charles galaxy pronto!.....

A fine rendition!

Maybe its me but bring them there vox up a tad Crawdad!
And if I could sing anywhere NEAR like you do I would be in peoples faces with it!

The entire recording is really clean and as usual the Lt. adds to the arrangement.

5 Big Ones

Okay, this goes back on top...

...there...

...still mad at me, crawdad? Aw man... I was just playing... how long could a guy hold a grudge :)

Excellent!

Very tastefully done on both the performance and the mix.

Your voice has more range than you think, crawdad. ;)

Very nice riffing, Lt.Bob.:)

This is how it's done folks.
