Low EQ problem in VF160

FYI...

I heard directly from Fostex that the low shelving EQ is fixed (the frequency actually effected) at 100Hz even though the display reads 400Hz. They also said that there isn't a software fix in the works because the CPU is "filled up". I personally would sacrifice a couple of reverbs and delays (which aren't that good anyway) for a usable low parametric EQ, wouldn't you?

amen to that!

the thing that i think that i will have to do is just buy me a eq to plug in to my channel line until i can aford a better recorder.

Its a drag that they will not be fixing it. I find that if I get good flat basic tracks it is fine for rolling the bass out. I sucks for boost.

Since I wanted 16 tracks at once I bought the Fostex VC8 to get 8 more channels. I connect it to a small Soundcraft SpiritFX8 board and the tracks that get recorded dont need no more ( or little ) stinking EQ in the mix.

If so I can play 8 tracks out of the VF16 into the FX8, EQ to taste and re-record. But mostly I save files on ZIP and Mix in Nuendo.

The VF-16 is a great sounding box if you have some nice mics and a good source to record.

To Phil. Have you ever considered getting a soundcard with ADAT i/o? It makes it easier to work with computer when you can do overdubs by recording directly from VF-16's analog inputs to Nuendo without having to first record stuff on VF and then export to wav on Zip disk. I was thinking about getting me the VC 8 too but then I found a cheap second hand Fostec VM-88 digital mixer /w adat-i/o that gives me extra four XLR inputs and two line level stereo inputs to work with.

VF - to ADAT

I have thought about that. One thing I think others have said before, and I have not been able to prove was wrong is the VF-16 will not do what the VC8 and VM88 do easily.

That is take 8 analog in and send it out via ADAT in real time.

If I had a SC with ADAT in ( which I want to get - but can not figure which one) I would probably go Soundcraft FX8 - VC8 - Nuendo.

I still see no reason to not use the VF for tracking. The fostex is 100% reliable in recording. I just push the buttons and join in the music making fun.

Nuendo on the other hand is a pain in the ass to operate and locks up in the middle of the best takes. Some day when I get 16 channels of 24/96 going into Nuendo on a machine that rivals the fostex for reliability, then the VF-16 will go in a suitecase for remote work. Until then Viva La Fostex!

VF-16 does it. You can plug into the VF's analog inputs and when you select the Direct mode and select the desired channel to input and push the record button no make it blink red then the signal will go from input thru the corresponding adat channel out of VF. You don't have to record anything just make the recod button blink and you're set. You can simultaneously monitor both the channels going from VF to computer and the channels played back from the computer. This setup gives you 4 stereo outputs to send audio to from Nuendo and if you really want to make things complicated you can even send signals from nuendo to outboard gear thru VF's aux sends and route them back thru VF's analog inputs for monitoring or recording back to different tracks on Nuendo. I'm not saying that you shouldn't use VF for tracking but that there's the option of going direct to Nuendo instead of fiddling with Zip disks if you wish to do so. What I like the best about VF is that there's so many different ways you can use it. Viva la Fostex, indeed.

Well that is great! What ADAT sound card have you been using?

The next problem I have to solve is getting the midi sync thing straightened out. I have not been successful in having the tracks I fly via spdif sync in nuendo.
