Yeah, the voice is mixed a tad too far back, but that is what the singer wanted.

Enjoy.

This is my favourite of the tunes you've been posting lately.

Guitars seemed to settle into the mix over time. I felt a little railed at the start, but by the end it was all meat. Liked how the bass owned that bridge section.

Hell of a guitar lead.

Hey that was a cool song. I agree, the vocals are too far back in some places, but in others they sound about right. The song is definitely catchy and I like those breaks in there

I can't imagine why he'd want the vocals down that low for a song like this. If it was "metal", I might understand. But this is just straight up hard rock. Must be driving you nuts. Oh well...

The guitars sound really good. Bass is tight.

Oooo...I like those toms at 2:00. Nice.

Yeah, it's almost kind of a waste because I imagine you used a pretty good vocal chain, but just about every detail is lost in guitars. Is it insecurity or "artistic effect?"

Just needed to add this again. The client paid for one day to mix 10 songs. I have spread that time out over a couple week period as I have other sessions to do at another facility, live sound work, and refereeing soccer games to do in between. To top it off, I have been fighting a cold for the last 6 days! :(

If any of you thought doing this for money would be a lot of fun, and that you can do stuff perfect all the time, this whole Love Lode thing that I keep posting songs for should be a nice little insight into what the reality of professional engineering can be sometimes. This isn't the first time a client wanted many mixes done in a very short amount of time. Generally, I don't even have the luxury of just doing a little at a time then coming back to it like I do here.

I could nit pick 100 other things about this mix that don't sit well with me. A big one being how "small" the bass guitar sounds because of the fact that he played the strings very hard while tracking which caused the strings to not get a full rich tone. The backup vocals would also need either to be re-tracked or extensive editing to get them tight as far as starting/stopping on time with each other. I also didn't like how "edgy" I tracked the backup vocals now that I hear them back (this was tracked about 4 or 5 years ago....). The floor tom's top head appearently went out of tune before this take, thus has a very flabby/cardboard sound to it, which sucks during the post solo break down part. Oh well. With more time I could play around with Drumagog and a floor tom sample to see if that worked, but that probably would sound phoney. :(

The kick and snare drum need some work too. I think the kick is too "stabby" sounding and the compression on it isn't regulating it as well as I would like. Something like a Cranesong STC-8 would probably give me closer to what I am looking for, but the Behringer Composer Pro I am using will have to suffice! LOL Generally, I would have preferred a bit sharper/cracky sounding snare, but any more added high frequency eq to the snare would bring out the ride cymbal ring on the snare track every time he hits the snare.

I am happy overall with the guitars. A few performance issues that I could deal with in editing, but you would have to listen close for those and in a way, I sort of like the loosygoosy vibe to them right now. :)

Loud, isn't it... not much of a waveform to speak of - everything's more or less solid LOL.

Nice sound, though. You said you didn't like the bass sound, but I did - I thought it was great.

"If any of you thought doing this for money would be a lot of fun, and that you can do stuff perfect all the time"

Nah - I don't do it for money, plus it's a lot of work, plus I keep aiming at perfect and wondering why I keep falling so short...

You're still using that Behringer Composer Pro, huh? Is it a case of loyalty, know-how, or lack of funds? :D

Because that is what the owner of the studio has in the rack. This particular setup I am mixing with doubles as a live sound rig.

Allen and Heath GL2200

4 Behringer Composer Pro's
1 Behringer MultiGate
1 Lexicon MPX-1
1 Lexicon Reflex
1 Lexicon MPX-100

I have a HHB Radius 40 in this setup that another engineer is letting me use. I also added in a Alesis 3630 from the self at the shop that i am using on the bass. I also have my Alesis Q2 in the rack just in case I need another effect. On this stuff, since mostly I just need a verb to fatten the snare, tom's, guitars, and a little delay on the voice, I haven't used it yet.

Cool Ed,
I loved the solo. Yeah, too bad the vocs are so far back. I liked the bass tone in this too. ....tight and punky. ...also like the panning on the bg vocs, especially during the bass only section. Nice!

OK well I feel the need to make myself look stupid infront of one of the most respected individuals on the board (or I'm just saying that to counter-act what I'm about to say), anyway, the equipment listed above, was that the ONLY stuff you used (minus mics and instruments?). Does the Allen and Heath GL2200 have preamps of some sort, or just a mixer etc. Ta

This CD was tracked using Blackface ADAT's and mostly ART preamps. The overheads used a TL Audio classic pre.

The mics were a RE 27 on kick 1, and a D-112 for kick 2 (d-112 about 4" from the beater and the RE-27 just inside the drum), SM-57 for snare, toms, guitars. Bass was DI'ed from the instrument and his amp head. Lead guitars were a AT 4050. Vocals were all 4033.

The ADAT tapes were transferred into Sonar via a MOTU 2408 just recently. I then output via the 2408 back into the ADAT's digital in and use the ADAT's as D/A converters for each track which then go to the console for mixing. The mix was recorded back into the computer via the 2408's A/D.

This was tracked in the bands practice room which was about 15'X20', and had only carpet on the walls. Bass and drums were done "live". Everything else was over dubbed.

Very catchy. These are the aural interests I've been extolling on my posts today. Unexpected breaks. Unique chord progressions. Nice verse/bridge/chorus transitions. Clean, professional sound.

WICKED guitar break! I ate that shit up!

This is a definite keeper. I have to agree that the vocals are fine in spots and too low in others. Can't you sneak them up a bit where they need to be up a bit and not tell anyone? :-)

I love it when people can write straight-up rock tunes and make them interesting. This is f-ing cool.

damn, that whole thing is tight. That mix is clean and kickin butt with transparency, I don`t hear nothin but good instrument and vocal tones. Those vocals sounded good to me but I think your idea would have been good pushing them out some more.
