Hi. I sometimes have loud signers to record. I use a Apex 205 ribbon mic at 8 inches from the singner. When they go AAAAAAAAH really loud as Whitney , we can hear it sizzle a bit. I use an Art TPS-II pre-amp, a Ghost mixer and an M-Audio 1010LT card. The tracking room is 18x11 with half wooden walls. I never have a problem with any recording but with these loud ones. What should I use to tame these glass-breaking voices ? Thanks guys.

1) teach them better mic technique
2) turn down the preamps a little
3) compress the vocal on the way in
4) refuse to play and take the ball home with you

Yep. I'd just make one small refinement: advise them if they can't get #1 right by the third take that you'll jump right to #4.

:D I compress with a Behringer MDX2600 but still the little overload in the take is audible. I'll try to turn down the preamp a bit after I show them how to throw it in correctly. Thanks much, I be around to give an update on it. See ya later.

That's not the mic for them.
Switch it out for something different. For one mic can't do it all.
May I suggest a shure SM 7 works really good on loud singers.
But if you must use your Apex 205 back them up a few feet and go from there.

I can't seem to find SM7, only SM7B. They say that the SM7B is an upgrade. I saw the SM7B in action in a radio station and it sounds great, but on a loud vocalist ?

Why not? I got one, and I yell at it from time to time. Doesn't distort at all.

Ok well thank you guys, I will go for this one. I hope I will be able to pay forward to newbies ! This place has knowledged and helpful people. I will keep you informed on the results.
