Loss of contact with Audio device, Cubase SX not booting up.

Hey all.

I just installed Cubase SX the other day, and I'm having some weird issues...

First things first, I'm working on an old outdated system but, according to the Steinberg Box, I should be ok... regardless:

Intel Celeron 766
384 MB SDRAM
Win 2k
Virtual Memory settings are at 652/652 for applications.

Now, I have a new PC shipping as I type but, I was really hoping to test this out on my old PC, so I could "delve" right in when the new PC arrives...

Anyway, on to the problems.

When opening Cubase for the first time, it told me to test my ASIO settings for my sound device (Echo MIA MIDI) which it did, and said everything was fine. While still booting up (a few seconds later) a pop-up informed me that Cubase had lost contact with the Audio device, and I should "Reset" the device via the options menu, or Restart Windows and/or Cubase. I hit the "ok" button and let it continue to load.... but it never did. It started to "initialize FL Studio VSTi" and died.... it just hung there for about 20 minutes and did nothing. I try to stop the process via the Task Manager, and nothing. It's just dead. I try to reboot... nothing, it won't even shut down properly.

So, I ran a system scan for viruses which to my surprise (sarcasm implied) there were no viruses from my install of Steinberg. Big Shock, I know. There are no errors on the hard disk, I even defrag'd the drive but still, it get's to the point of initializing FL Studio and dies...

Any idea why I can't get this to boot up?
 
Try uninstalling th Fruity Loops vsti. If it boots after that, that was your problem.
 
Go into Cubase, Devices and setup your soundcard so that it's using the ASIO WDM driver that comes the the MIA. You're testing it against the Multimedia setup and you don't need to do that or worry about that once you're using the ASIO drivers.

That should eliminate your problems.

I don't think you noticed that the main problem is, I can't get Cubase to open up. It dies part-way through...lol..

xstatic, do you know if I can uninstal the VSTi from FL Studio by itself? To uninstall FL Studio all together will be a pain in the butt, because I have thousands of sound files in it... and I'll have to back them up first... :(
 
I would try uninstalling Cubase, then do a reinstall.

This time though when you start Cubase and it asks to test your ASIO settings, select no.

You shouldn't have to run this test as I believe the Echo Mia should have it's own ASIO drivers.

Once (if) cubase starts up after that, go to devices and select the proper ASIO driver for your Mia card.
 
Hopefully you can uninstall just the vsti. If not, look in the Cubase folder, the Steinberg folder, and in the FL studio folder. Most likely in either (or both) the Steinberg folder and/or the Cubase folder there will be another called vstplugins. Inside that will be other subfolders and DLL files. Look for a DLL file with a name that leads you to believe it is the FLstudio vsti. Drag that file (make sure you get em all) out of those folders and onto your desktop or somewhere out of the Steinberg folder where you know where it is. Typically when Cubase locks up on a certain plugin during start up, that plug in is conflicting some how. Moving it like I said will keep it from loading. If Cubase starts after that, check all your preferences. Then put the DLL back and try starting again. If it still crashes, check FL studio's website fro known issues, bugs, and updates. Also check the user FAQ. If still no luck, give their tech support a call. Personally, I wouldn't delete the DLL, just store it somewhere safe for a while. Also, there should be vstplugins folders in both the Steinberg folder and the Cubase folder. If the DLL was in just one of them, try moving it to the other. I have no idea why this would work, but if I remember right I had this happen once or twice before. Just as a tip, you will notice that the VST plugins folder in the CUbase folder is somewhat organized, folders called "modulation" , "reverb" etc... if you organize these like this than your plug in screens will come up organized like that as well. Just a helpful tip if you ever want to change how your plugins are arranged (at least your VST ones)
 
disable onboard sound

I don't know if you just installed this soundcard or w/e, but i just installed a new one and I got the same message until I disabled the sound on my motherboard. You have to do this by editing your BIOS. Sometimes you can just do it in the screen you get when you press whatever the identified key is when you boot up. Sometimes it's F2 or Del or something. Or, you might have to change some pins on the motherboard, which is an old thing, but since your comp. is old. Just check those things. Sorry if this doesn't help.
