Looping devices/samplers?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place man but couldnt really see a relevant topic heading..
Anyway i want to know what it is that people use (more frequently these days too) to loop music live on stage, as they play it. You know where you see them doing a bassline for example, leaving it to loop over and over and then gettin the guitar out for a bit of twiddly dee over the top or whatever. They're not samplers are they, or are they?
Where specifically would i be looking, to buy one or compare devices?

Thanks

Well, there's a step sequencer in cycle mode involved there. I think they usually have a sampler built in nowadays.

Nice one

Thanks for the replies especially Mr Bob Ross - what a legend he is, i use his dulcet tones as a sleeping aid :)

I'll check the gear out, thanks

I use the slightly older, mono JamMan, on the occasions I gotta loop something.

I once used it to record the sounds of coconuts dropping from trees, bananas being squashed, oranges being pealed, etc. It was the latest example of FRUIT LOOPING.
