I'm not a professional musician; or a musician in any right. I'm just a very old school guy who likes messing around with ACID and coming up with interesting tunes. It's more of a hobby than anything else, but as I've gotten into it more and more, I find myself wishing that I had more control over the loops themselves, which leads to the question

I'd like to be able to create my own loops. The Chopper in ACID is a bit of a help, as well as the ACID tools in Sound Forge, but the results aren't nearly as original as I'd like. I don't own any musical instruments, so at the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, is there a product that will let me reproduce various instrument sounds, and then manipulate those sounds into useable loops?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joe,

Sounds to me like you need a keyboard/synth to reproduce all the weird and wonderful sounds for your loops. Now, aslong as the keyboard has MIDI then it will work with ACID, but the cheaper the keyboard/synth, the cheaper the sounds will sound. Personally i use a Yamaha PSR640, which has all the sounds i wish to use, but i also have a small oxygen keyboard and a sound module (Proteus 2000) which i use to get some amazing sounds. With these 3 hardware devices, and the effects i can get through my software, i think i could make pretty much any sound i wanted to. My Yamaha keyboard cost me £500 around 3 years ago, so i would think you could possibly pick one up for around £200ish now. Oxygen synths are small synths which only have 2 octaves (24 keys) and this would only set you back around £50ish second hand. Proteus 2000 sound module costs around £300 second hand, but you can get the Proteus 1000 for alot cheaper.

Depending on how much you wanted to spend, keyboards/synths can cost from as little as £70 up to thousands of pounds (Sorry, dont know the answer in dollars!)

If all your wanting is something quite cheap to produce some different sounds for your loops, nothing spectacular, i would go for the oxygen synth, or something similar so you can produce some nice sounds without spending hundreds of dollars in the process.

Hope all that helped :o

Good luck!

very old school and Acid in one sentence....never thought I'd see the day
anyway, take a look at Fruity Loops. nice program that you can do a lot with. Then if you want better sounds you need to find some samples to work with (you can buy sample CDs that are royalty free sounds to work with), or buy a synth.

Thanks for the help guys. :D I've decided to hit the local music shops and peek and poke around.
