Looking to Upgrade my Computer

Hi there,

Before I put together my home studio I would appreciate your input on the following things.

I will adding an 80gig hard drive to my computer. I will also be purchasing memory to 1gig total. My computer is a 2001 Gateway Pent 3 2gig processor.

Now, I need a quality soundcard to bring in the sounds I desire. Here is what I want to do.

1) Record Vocals
2) Record Guitar Parts

I do not need a bunch of simultaneous inputs. Basically I need 1 or 2. Thing is I do not completely understand how this all works.

1) For vocals I will need a mic & a preamp correct? - Are there some solid products you could point me to?
2) For guitar - can I use the same condensor mic for recording vocals?

How does the Soundcard work with all of this? Does the mic plug directly into the soundcard? What software can I use to take the vocals in?

Let me know what Soundcards would be best for my basic needs.

Thank you for your assistance!

Something like this would probably suit you well if you don't plan to need more inputs at a time in the future, or are on a budget atm.

as for a pre-amp

Just ideas, not advocating either.

Mic to pre-amp to input on the soundcard for both vocals and amp micing works pretty good.

I can't give much advice on the software side as I've mostly only used Cakewalk, but it's very user friendly, which is a plus.
