I have finally came to the conclusion that rather than trying to get our old PC to record digital audio I'm just going to do the build your own type of thing (I have heard it's better that way anyways). Now I consider myself somewhat computer smart but have obviously never done something like this before...BUT I have a friend of mine who's a computer tech and would probably help me along the way. But anyways, I was wanting to know info on some good brands and combinations to check out for motherboards, hard drives, processors, etc. I'd like to keep the price somewhat low but not to the point where I'll definitely need to upgrade. Plan on getting the obvious important basics (motherboard, ram, some "cheap" video card, processor) and for the audio related things: 2 hard drives (one 5400 and one 7200), soundcard (audiophile perhaps), CD Burner... That's pretty much all I got planned at this point. This will probably be a long term project and probably just build it piece by piece. My style of music is more rock oriented and I usually can record a decent demo of about 5 to 6 tracks but with a PC I may go a little overboard...although don't think I should exceed 20 tracks or anything. But anyways I'm open for any suggestions on where to start. Thanks.

Just b/c I said this was a long term project was no reason to run off :) I figure the 1st thing I'll buy (well besides the case) would be a motherboard. Any recommendations for a motherboard?

On another note I find myself to be very bad with money and what I want. I'm sure many of you remember a few months ago I was just looking for a soundcard for our current PC...well I could never get the Mia to work so I just took it back rather than trying to get it to work. Even the computer people I took it to didn't fix it...according to them everything installed ok...but I still got the error message when I got the PC back. I feel very sound with this decision to build my own PC for recording. I'm sure I'll save some bucks in the long run too. I did some searching through the old posts for answers but didn't see a lot of references to motherboards (although I'm sure perhaps I could be using the wrong search terms). This is the only one I was able to find: Asus A7M-266 . Any recommendations for motherboards? I'll probably give AMD processors a try since I've heard bad things about P4's and recording. Thanks.

For general computer hardware info go here:
www.tomshardware.com

In general AMD will give you better bang for the buck but sometime compatability issues arise. Intel is a little more bulletproof for hardware and driver issues but still not a sure thing.

Avoid a Motherboard with built in video or sound and make sure you get a case with a 300watt power supply because you will have a lot of drives and cards sucking up the juice.

cool, thanks tex...looks like an informative site. I figure at this time I may go ahead and buy a few cheap things 1st (case, floppy drive, etc) and the motherboard next. Any other suggestions please let me know...I figure it'd be best to go at this somewhat educated rather than being totally clueless. Thanks again.
