wt up slooky????
Well Slooky I'm not the most experienced but I do know this...The only 2 companies that make stuff compatible with windows vista seems to be "MOTU" (mark of the unicorn ) products (and they are nice..real nice..)..
Other than that is the fast track stuff from "M-Audio" and it's a lot cheaper than "MOTU"..Unless someone has put something else out recently that I don't know about thats it for right now....
I would spend the money and get the "Motu" stuff ..A friend of mine has the plastic "fast track" and I'm not a big fan. The "fast track" is usb but I'm not a big fan of none of the usb stuff..P.C.I or firewire is better..I could not give a shit on what anyone else says I do not like stuff like that on usb....
My Man Cant get that fast track loud enough..unless you bought a powered mixer plus some powered monitors or maybe some kind of amp for his already powered monitors..freakin ridiculous.....It's just tripped out to monitor and mix that thing..maybe it's o.k. for vst stuff but I don't like it... Not a good experience that I had with it at all...
The Motu has the cool audio interface with a more powerful playback and phantom power better pre amp section etc..It's like having a mixer already and etc..and it's a nice metal rack..Your recordings will sound alot better and it will be more enjoyable to work with especially with a set of powered monitors...
M-audio does make good stuff..I love them..The Delta 66, I love that but it does not work on vista..
Vista is a new O.S. so the choices are limited right now...here is a link to check out

That one has all the ins and outs or even more than what a novice needs

As far as what version of cakewalk I don't know much about cakewalk..I know it depends on what you are trying to record... i'm using adobe audition but i'm looking for a version of cakewalk where i can mix and program EZ drummer on some midi tracks so i can play my audio track of guitar at the same time i mix my drum tracks individually.....
Some versions of cakewalk will not convert wav to mp3 but my adobe audition can handle that ! i guess??? maybe cakewalk has it rigged where you have to buy they're stuff..I dunno..
Cakewalk has not responded to my e-mails as to what version will be right for me,,But I'm guessing all I should need is sonar home studio xl...hell I dunno and guess I never will...hope this helps I got cubase but That shit is hard and a pain in the ass and impossible to learn....cubase or Nuendo is for people with photographic memories and computer geniuses...or record producers.....
I hope someone will correct any bad info but I don't care what anyone says ,I do not recommend the fast track pro...take your money and go ahead and spend the extra 100 or 200 bucks and get something you will not regret and get something you will be happy with for a long time. Usually when you buy cheap you have to spend twice as much to get it to sound and work better anyways...And get something you can build on to later down the road...TTYL,RR
