my friend iz looking for a usb sound card 4 his laptop. yes i know there are plenty out there but he brought up a good point. the thing iz that he is looking for one that records in stereo with rca or 1/4" jacks . it also has to have midi in and out. it also has to have stereo out puts rca or 1/4". it also has to have xlr mic jacks to record with a mic. the closes thing we found is a fast track pro but it dose not record in stereo with rca's or 1/4" jacks but it has everything else. he does not want a firewire sound card because on his laptop it will not be powered, he would need a ac adapter to power it. he is always on the run and never know whos studio he is going to be in and they might not have any outlets to power it. is there any usb interface/sound cards that has all those i/o's

This has everything you mentioned --- LINK --- and more, as each microphone/line in has access to an insert point for inserting EQ, compression, etc in the signal path.

damn that got sum bad reviews, what about tha mbox does it have all that

Don't just rely on reviews; try it out yourself.

I was a little thrown off by this, are you saying his laptop doesn't have a FW jack at all? in which case you obviously don't want FW. If it does have a FW jack, shouldn't that automatically supply power to a FW interface that can be powered through the FW jack. I'll admit I'm no expert on the complete inner workings of the FW protocol, but that was how I understood it.

The Fast Track Pro does record in stereo via 1/4" inputs. No, it doesn't have RCA inputs, but you can get little RCA-->1/4" adapters at radio shack.

I own one and love it.

I don't expect it to play, compose or edit --- just to sit there built like a tank and send my music down the USB connection into the computer.

It really doesn't matter that it USB 1.1 because it's a 4-in, 2-out interface.

You are right RAK, but there are some interfaces that require more power than the FW bus can supply.

As far as USB interfaces, I would look at the mBox, only because I am pretentious when it comes to Pro Tools. :)

Thanks for the reply jimmy2sticks. That explains it.
I wasn't trying to think of something witty to say next, but I got nothing.
Oh well.
mBox doesn't have MIDI does it?

Yes, mbox contains MIDI.

The original mbox does not support MIDI:

Features:
2 analog inputs and outputs, featuring Focusrite mic preamps

24-bit stereo S/PDIF digital I/O

Pristine 24-bit signal path from input to output

2 analog TRS inserts

Headphone output with dedicated volume control

Zero-latency monitoring

100% USB powered

However, mbox2 does.

Mbox 2 has MIDI, the original Mbox does not, which is what I was thinking about.

Dude, there goes Jimmy2Sticks always copying my responses (you may think he posted first, but that's just a mind trick he's playing on all of you)

it has a firewire port but it is that smaller 4 pin port i think it is called the ieee1394 and it is not powered
