Is there a good site with instructions on building a studio rack with dimensions? I am looking to build a 4 space rack.

Thanks

Those are very nice pieces of furniture. My plans - albeit trivial compared to those things - are just a box for some units. For instance - Id rather have my Delta 1010 in a rack instead of on top of an upside down cardboard box :D
So when making this - do I make it 19" wide and put in the rack rails - or do I make it larger than 19" to accomodate for the rails?
Also - what is the standard rack height for one unit?
I guess thats basically the stripped down info Im looking for.

Thanks for replying

Just buy 4 unit rack rails and mount them on the inside of of the opposing walls of your rack, which need to be 19.5" apart.

Thanks - that is exactly what I was looking for. Are there any recommendations as to where to get the rack rails (keeping in mind I dont need 4,000 of them and that I dont prefer paying more in shipping than in product.) In other words - can you find things like this at a HomeDepot or something?

That might vary depending on the rails though.

To be exact your hole centers should be close to 18.5" There is a bit of leeway in the spec and that is why most rack units have oval holes for the screws. The actual tolerance is around 18 1/4 - 18 5/8.

The rails I use have the holes that are 1/2" from the wood when mounted. So if you want the holes to be 18.5" and you need 1/2" on each side for mounting that makes 19.5" right? I thought pretty much all rack rails were the same dimension on the hole edge. Am I retarded?

Yes but that is irrelevant. ;)

You could be right but there is no set standard for racks other than the 19" max distance. I would measure the hole distances just to be sure. You never know who made the rack ears and what tolerances they decided to go with. I got slightly different measurments from every rack I measured.

Very true. Manufacturer to manufacturer the demensions of the rail itself can very. The 18 1/2" would be correct on the hole centers for rack rails. In any rack case you would want to build, the inside demension would depend on what ever rack rails you use. I found this out the hard way once upon a time.

Depends on where you live. The Guitar Center here usually has some in stock but the selection is pretty limited. I think I payed about $14 for 8 space rails. Check your local music stores.

What Tex said.

I bought mine from guitar center. The inner dimension of my box ended up being 19.125 inches.

They charge too much for a simple piece of angle iron, but I couldn't find anything that would work at the local hardware stores.

These things are riduculously easy to build. Home depot will cut the plywood for you, then all you need is to borrow a router, nails or screws, and glue.

Another tip - either buy a Furman unit for your top rack space or mount a power strip inside the box.

Good point. What I've done is to buy as many double gang steel boxes and face plates as I anticipate needing outlets and put a long heavey duty power chord on the and screw them to the inside back of the cab. The only thing that can fuck you here are Wall Warts as they eat space.

I like how the racks look at nice-racks.com, so I am going to try to emulate that. I have all the tools at my disposable - less a good router which I will get around with an electric sander. I appreciate the tips very much - thanks! Im not sure Im going to put a power box in it - I will just run the wires out the back and into a surge protector...at least for now...
Thanks again...this board rocks
