Does anyone remember the song Computer Love by Roger? What I am looking for is how I can recreate the vocal effects. What do I need? Also, the other effect I am looking for is what type of effect is used to that makes vocals sound like you are talking on a phone?

It's called a vocoder. My Behringer DSP1000 produces
this effectby hooking up a mic into the input of my DSP
and using the keyboard as a controller to change the vocal tonalities of my voice, though I can't sing worth a d@mn!

Pardon my dumbness, but how do you use a keyboard as a controller with the DPS (aka, hook-up info)?

thanks for the info

How do you use the keyboard. Do you sing monotone and play the notes you WANT to sing on the keyboard? You do try and sing the notes you play on the keyboard?

A vocoder takes the frequency spectrum of one sound and applies it to another sound. This is usually done by splitting both sounds up in loads of bands with band pass filters, and then changing the volume of each band on one sound to match the volume of the other sound.

When a voice is used to modify the frequencies of a musical instrument, you get the effect that it sounds like the instrument is talking. This is the effect in the mentioned song. This can also be done with similar results with a so called "talk box". A good example of that is the "Oh-oh-oah Oah-Oah" sound in Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a prayer".

You don't control the DPS with the keyboard, you patch a synth sound in one channel and the voice in the other. I think it work best if you don't sing at all, but TALK into the mic while you are playing. That may differ with different vocoders I've only used the one in the Nord Modular.

True regebro, but when I use the vocoder effect on my dsp,
I talk thru the mic while depressing the keys on my keyboard
which gives me the "robotic"effect and allowing me to "sing"
in key.For example,if I simply use a Cmajor scale and "sing"
"Do-Re-Mi-Fa etc" my keyboard, connected to the dsp controls
the harmonic value of my voice.
However,I very rarely use. Why? I can't sing for sh#t!

1 more thing;I have seen Roger(forgot his last name;who was
shot and killed by his brother a couple years ago) in a 1- man concert and he used the same method I previously described. The same can be said with George Clinton of Parliment/Funkadelic fame. He also used a keyboard to control harmonically and melodically his voice thru the vocoder.
Peace

Thanks for the help. By the way, his name was Roger Troutman... I am thinking about picking up a DSP and checking it out. I mainly need it for the vocoder effect, but how do the other effects sound?

Yo'viceaversa,I use the Behringer DSP1000 Pro. The vocoder effect on this gear is cool. The DSP1000 is dual/mono-stereo
signal processor which also has various tyoes of 'VERB's,
chorus, flange, echo etc. It's decent, easy to use and you can
adjust each effect in 0.5 increments. It's not the best DSP
on the market nor is it the worst, but it serves my purpose well,'specially in the 'Verb's category. I also own a Zoom
(really noisey) and a Lexicon Mpx100(so-so).My younger brutha' ,who's into hip-hop and rap owns the Lexicon MPX500
and it's great,but since I'm always on a budget,the DSP1000
serves my needs well.@ $80-90 it's a bargain and does the job IMHO!
Peace
