We are on the same mission
I decided to take the plunge in this USB audio challenge. I went to guitar center and picked up an emagic EMI 2|6 for $249.99. They have a liberal return policy so I figure the time it takes to test will be more productive than trying find some definative results on the internet.
My system:
Dell Inspiron 8100
1 gig P3
256 mb
30 gig hdd
Win XP
I installed latest (1.3 I think) drivers from emagic website almost without a hitch. There seems to be a limitation within windows sound drivers that only allow playback from two of the six outputs. I have been really short on sleep lately so I haven't been able to focus enough see what the deal is but I DO NOT have six outputs. I have a 2 in 2 out device in XP with Cakewalk pro audio 9. This is the same limitation the guy at M-audio decribed to me about the Quattro.
I am playing back 12 16 bit audio tracks though the 2 outs without issue. 7 of the 12 are single takes that are over 3:45 seconds. Each track has some effects, reverb, delay.
I recorded a single stereo track of silence while playing the previous track. Disk access spiked at 32% a couple of times. Mostly it was in the high teens. CPU was around 10%. Playing back the 12 tracks with the additional stereo track had disk access spikes at 42% but mostly low 30s.
I don''t have a bunch of plugins on this machine so my ability to really push it over the top is kind of weak. Wouldn't that be more of a CPU thing anyway?
I have no idea what the sound quality of the recording is yet. I just started messing with it. I am going out on the road with my band tomorrow so I might go get the quattro to see what it is like and take the best for the trip.
My complaints are mainly a lack of meaningful documentation and it uses RCA connectors. It is very glossy plastic and will probably look like hell after being dragged around for any amount of time. It does come with a little pouch.
The size is nice, about the same as a VHS tape. Powered by the usb port.
If the quattro performs similarly I will likely go for it because of the midi support and it interfaces directly with the omni i/o.
I hope this gives some kind of insight. I will post any major discoveries/disappointments.
