Greetings everyone! I'm new to the board and i'm looking for some opinions from you all. My husband and I have been deliberating a delima that we have. I have decided to turn to the internet which we all know is a great source of information. I searched for a recording board, and came up with this one. A brief background for you. My husband has a very nice prostudio in our basement. I don't know very much about redording, however my husband, Steve, is not one to utilize these types of boards, so I thought i'd attempt to do it. It took him many years of saving and research of what to buy. So, before he had all of this great stuff, he recorded with a Yamaha MD8. Reciently he decided to sell it via craigslist, because he hasn't used it for quite sometime. So, he got it out, and tested it to be sure it still worked properly with the appropriate minidisks that he had with some old recordings on them. Everything worked great.

We listed it and got a call immediately. A man named Jeff came by to see it, brought a disk of his own to test out on it and decided that it worked and bought it for $200 ($100 less then what Steve was selling it for). While Jeff was here, he reported to my husband, Steve, that he has another Yamaha MD8 at home, and that his has a "suttle flutter sound for whatever reason when he tries to burn his stuff in the 8 track format, but only seems to happen during playback". He also said that "he only needs it to last long enough to transfer over all his material". Another thing he briefly spoke about was that he used to have a 4 track Yamaha.

Jeff bought it and left. Steve even gave him 6 of his minidisks to go with it that he wouldn't need to use anymore. Later that night, he emailed Steve and said that his MD8 that he got from him, is doing the same thing as the other one and that he would like his money back. So, meanwhile, since that email, they have exchanged a few emails. Steve basically told him that he tested the machine, everything worked fine and that if he can come back to our house and reproduce what he is experiencing by recording something here, that he'll give him his money back. This guy Jeff doesn't seem to want to do that, because he's avoiding that offer entirely, however he continuously tries to reassure Steve that he is being honest and that thie machine just isn't going to work for him.

Meanwhile, we want to be fair. We don't want to sell something to someone that truely isn't working or a feature isn't behaving correctly. We don't want to screw anyone. However, we are suspicious of this guy and his intentions. We don't know him, but he sure did seem nice. I have been doing research on the net to see if there is a known problem with something like this guy Jeff is describing. I haven't found anything via searching or on Yamaha's website. I have found other known issues with this piece of equipment, but not what this guy is describing and the issues that I have found haven't been an issue on the unit that Steve sold to Jeff. We are not a store. We sold (what we think is) a working piece of equipent to this guy. We don't know him either. Steve doesn't know how much Jeff knows about recording and thinks that it's possibly user error, or an error on his part somehow, because this has never happened to Steve while using this piece of equipment. Steve is suspicious that he won't come over to recreate the issue here at our house. Not to mention that thiis guy also mentioned to Steve that he "only needs it long enough to transfer over his material".

Several things from you all. Anyone know what this issue is? Any experience with it? Anyone use Yamaha MD8? Also, what are your opinions on the whole situation? We really do want to be fair, but Jeff won't adress the issue of recreating the problem he has with the unit, and he just want's his money back. Unfortunately, we are a bit leary in belileving him. Like I said earlier, we're not a store. We don't have a return policy. But we absolutely would refund his money if it didn't truly work. What are the odd's of two different machine's doing the same thing? Suspicious? Steve says it sounds like a disk problem to him.

Thoughts?
