Hi guys

fairly new recorder hear. I have been hearing this sound in a fairly few songs of late its like a echoy windy sounding instrument but i cant find anywhere in my logic pro or konkat 4. One instance is start of chorus for bruno marz "just the way you are". and verse in secondhand serenade song "like a knife". ANy one can tell me what midi instrument their using etc be a great help.

thanks

Sounds like a whistle patch from an FM (e.g., Yamaha DX) or phase distortion (e.g., Casio CZ) synth engine, with a rather percussive attack on the envelope, going through heavy reverb. Synth engines don't typically have reverb, so you'd have to edit the whistle tone to get the right envelope, then run it through an effects processor for the reverb.

lol, sounds like processed guitar feedback to me, amazing how different people hear different things - though i am on a crappy netbook.

i would process a guitar plugin that has feedback of even harmonics integrated

Firstoff, this thread should really be in the Keyboards and Sound Modules thread.

The 1st song and 2nd are slightly different, but I understand why he (the OP) thinks they are the same.

I have recreated both sounds by adjusting these settings on my Virtual Analog synth:

There are 3 Oscillators on my VA, but I'm not using any of them (turn them all off). Now my Novation Supernova II has an additional sound source of "Noise". Use that in whatever Analog synth you are using. These instructions work for any analog synth. Interestingly enough, in my Kurzweil's DSP algorithms, the same type sound is being made with a DSP bandpass filter. Look now (below) for settings.

Analog Sound Source: Noise

Filter: Bandpass at 24db (that's the steepest curve, i.e. 4 pole)
Frequency - 74
Resonance - 127 (maximum)
Tracking - 127 (this aids the tonal pitch of the maxed out Resonance as you play up and down the keyboard)

Amp Envelope:
Attack - 0 (immediate)
Decay - 81
Sustain - to your liking, but probably around 63+
Release - 74

Effects: Reverb (Medium Plate)
Send - 74
Decay - 94

NOTE: When this patch is played with zero (0) sustain in the Amp Envelope, it sounds literally like a submarine's sonar ping being heard under water.
